LNIPE Student Shruti Upadhyay Dies After Delayed Treatment — Students Protest, Demand Independent Inquiry

A wave of protest has hit the Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education (LNIPE), North East Regional Centre, after the death of 22-year-old Shruti Upadhyay — a third-year B.P.Ed student from West Bengal.

Shruti first complained of severe abdominal pain on September 4. She was taken to Sonapur District Hospital, where doctors reportedly advised she be shifted to a private hospital in Guwahati. Students allege there was a delay in this transfer as approval was sought from the LNIPE health centre doctor — and that she was finally admitted to Nemcare Hospital, Guwahati, only on the evening of September 6.

Despite treatment, Shruti passed away on the morning of September 8. Students allege her appendix had ruptured, though the official medical cause of death is yet to be confirmed.

Her mother, in a heartbreaking account, said Shruti's body was so swollen when she arrived at the hospital that she initially could not recognise her own daughter — and had to identify her by her clothes.

Meet Deeksha Tewari — the young Wushu athlete from Naduar who just won THREE medals for India at the Batumi Open International Wushu Championship 2026.

But the real story isn't just the medals.

It's her mother, riding a scooty through the night, after a full day of managing her own business and household — just to get her daughter to training on time.

It's the neighbours who had opinions about a woman out late at night.

It's a teenager waking up at 5:30 AM, training till 11, resting, and going right back out from 4 PM to 10 PM — every single day.

It's a family that gave everything so Georgia wouldn't remain "an unheard name."

A child sat inside a car with his family — Assam tourists visiting Meghalaya. Then the glass shattered around him.

This is what happened after a KSU rally in Shillong turned violent on August 19. Vehicles with Assam number plates were targeted. Statues were torn down. 31 vehicles damaged, 2 burned, 16 people injured.

Two days later — petrol bombs. Government offices. Police outposts. Across Meghalaya.

Now the Assam-Meghalaya border is sealed. Taxi drivers on both sides have stopped services. Patients, students, and families are stranded between two "sister states" that suddenly don't feel like sisters at all.

Drug Traffickers KILLED Assam Police SI Nabajit Das? Himanta Biswa Sarma Breaks Silence

Assam Sub-Inspector Nabajit Das, posted at Laisong outpost in Dima Hasao, was killed on the night of August 14 — a day before Independence Day — while conducting a routine naka checking. What first looked like a road accident has now turned into a suspected targeted murder, allegedly linked to drug traffickers operating along the Myanmar–Manipur–Assam narcotics corridor.

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has stated the government has "credible information" that drug peddlers and traffickers were behind the killing, reigniting the state's zero-tolerance war on drugs echoed earlier by Union Home Minister Am , , , , , , , , , , , , , , Shah.

Shillong BURNS: KSU Black Flag Rally turns violent, govt vehicle torched

BREAKING: A black flag bike rally organised by the Khasi Students' Union (KSU) in Shillong turned violent today, with reports of vehicle vandalism and arson across multiple areas of the city.

At least one government vehicle was set on fire in Mawlai, while the glass cover of the Vivekananda statue in RR Colony was also vandalised. Protesters reportedly targeted government vehicles in at least three locations across the city.

The rally began around 4 PM from the KSU office in Jaiaw, passing through Lumdiengjri, Malki, Dhankheti, Umpling, Golf Link and Mawlai Mawroh before returning to Jaiaw. Most shops in the city downed shutters as tensions rose.

The identity of those responsible and the exact circumstances behind the violence remain unclear at this time. We will bring you updates as more information emerges.

Manipur | "No NRC, No Census" | Sekmai shuts down: Indigenous people back JFD strike over NRC demand

Shops and business establishments remained closed in and around Sekmai, Imphal West on Wednesday, August 19, as indigenous people in the area extended support to the 48-hour general strike called by the Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD).

The shutdown was observed in solidarity with JFD's demand to update the National Register of Citizens (NRC) before the Census is conducted in Manipur. Local residents and business communities backed the agitation, keeping normal commercial activity largely suspended in the Sekmai area.

JFD has raised the slogan "No NRC, No Census," insisting the Census exercise be deferred until the NRC is updated.

Rajdhani Express Halted for Elephant Herd: Assam Forest & Railways Team Up for Safe Passage

In a commendable joint effort, Assam Forest Department staff and Indian Railways authorities successfully ensured the safe crossing of a large elephant herd across railway tracks near Hawaipur in Assam's Hojai district.

The Down Rajdhani Express was briefly halted at Km 167/8 under the Lanka Range (Nagaon South Division) after alert forest personnel and the Lumding Railway Control Room signaled the loco-pilot. The coordinated action allowed the herd to cross unharmed before the train safely resumed its journey.

Assam Forest Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah praised the quick coordination and vigilance of the ground teams in protecting the region's wildlife.

Mankachar court sentences two men to 20 years in jail for r**e of minor

A court in Mankachar has sentenced two men to 20 years' imprisonment for abducting and ra**ng a 15-year-old minor girl after taking her to Guwahati.
District and Sessions Judge Rajesh Kumar Todi of the Hatsingimari District and Sessions Court pronounced the verdict on Monday. The court also imposed a fine of ₹30,000 each on the two convic with an additional one-year imprisonment if the fine is not paid.
The case dates back to January 5, 2022, when the minor was allegedly abducted and taken to
Guwahati, where she was sexually assaulted for four days. Police later rescued the girl and arrested both accused.
