Across India, Vishwakarma Puja honors Lord Vishwakarma, the celestial architect and master craftsman. Among the Nyishi community of Arunachal Pradesh, this spirit of divine creativity lives on in the legend of Ato Niya Loma (ञिया लौमा) – the God of Blacksmiths.

Born as the boneless child of Abo Tani’s lineage, Niya Loma was taken by divine forces to the forge of Poyu Loma, the Blacksmith God. There he was transformed into a radiant being, the eternal smith who shaped sacred ritual bells and metals, known as Richi – each carrying a spiritual purpose, from guiding souls of the departed to blessing marriages and empowering priestly chants.

Just as Vishwakarma symbolizes the sanctity of labor and craftsmanship in the wider Indian ethos, Niya Loma embodies the same eternal principle in the Nyishi worldview – that every being has a purpose, and every tool forged carries a divine blessing.

On this day, while much of India celebrates Vishwakarma, let us also remember Niya Loma – the eternal source of creativity, metallurgy, and sacred craft in the Nyishi tradition.
