Prof. Nirala Ramchiary of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, has led a groundbreaking study revealing the promising anti-cancer potential of Northeast India’s famous Bhut Jolokia or Ghost Chilli. The research, conducted at JNU’s School of Life Sciences, showed significant reduction in tumour size and cancer growth in mouse models. The studies also highlighted the chilli’s ability to trigger apoptosis, or programmed cell death, in cancer cells. Originally from Baksa district of Assam’s BTC region, Prof. Ramchiary said the findings could open new avenues in cancer research while showcasing Bhut Jolokia as both a cultural pride and scientific asset of Northeast India.
