On June 27, 2025 Japan executed Takahiro Shiraishi, known as the Twitter Killer, for the brutal murders of nine people in 2017. This was the country’s first ex*****on in nearly three years.
Shiraishi used Twitter to find victims who were feeling suicidal. He promised to help them—but instead, he killed and dismembered them, keeping their body parts in his apartment.
The shocking case horrified the nation. His hanging has reopened discussions about capital punishment, mental health, and online safety in Japan. Justice officials defended the move, calling his crimes “selfish and extremely cruel.”
