NALBARI, ASSAM: A youth accused of a violent machete attack on two teenagers was shot dead by police in Assam's Nalbari district on Monday afternoon.

The suspect, identified as Ashik Ali (alias Roz), had allegedly stalked and harassed an 18-year-old girl for marriage. On Sunday, he attacked the girl and her 19-year-old cousin, Madhurjya Barman, with a machete while they were traveling on a scooter near the girl's home. Barman, a local student leader (AASU), died from his injuries, while the girl remains hospitalized in critical condition.

Following a manhunt, police tracked the suspect to a nearby river island (sandbar). According to Nalbari Superintendent of Police Bibekananda Das, after recovering the murder weapon, the suspect snatched a service rifle from a policeman, fired four rounds, and attempted to flee. Police retaliated, striking him in the chest. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

State officials emphasized a zero-tolerance policy for crimes against women, noting this marks the fourth police encounter involving suspected criminals or extremists in Assam over a eight-day period.
