🎥 | Police have initiated legal action against a woman from Lakhimpur district after a video showing her driving a car with a toddler seated on her lap behind the steering wheel went viral on social media.

According to police, a team from Khanapara Traffic Outpost traced and brought Sabita Das of Lakhimpur after the video surfaced online. The footage showed her driving a Tata Nexon car bearing registration number AS01GA8946 with a toddler sitting on her lap while she was behind the wheel.

During questioning, Das stated that the video was recorded near Beltola in Guwahati on June 2, 2026, at around 4:07 am. She told police that the child seen in the video was her sister’s daughter.

Police counselled her on the risks associated with such driving behaviour and warned her against repeating the act.

A case has been registered against her under Section 184(f) of the Motor Vehicles Act. Police said her driving licence has been seized and the process for its suspension is underway.

Reacting to the incident, Assam Police said in a post on X that children should not be used as props for social media content. The police cautioned that reckless acts carried out for online attention can endanger young lives and urged people to act responsibly and prioritise children's safety.

| The Supreme Court has ruled that overqualification can serve as a valid ground for disqualification from certain jobs, emphasizing that employers are entitled to set an upper limit on educational qualifications for specific posts.

A bench comprising Justices Ansanuddin Amanullah and R. Mahadevan observed that the government’s decision to restrict eligibility to candidates with lower qualifications is both reasonable and equitable, as it ensures opportunities for individuals who could not pursue higher education due to life circumstances.

The court noted that allowing highly qualified candidates, including PhD holders, to compete for posts intended for less-qualified applicants would undermine the purpose of such policies and deprive genuinely eligible candidates of employment opportunities.

The ruling came while upholding the termination of a bank employee who had concealed his graduation degree at the time of joining, despite the job specification requiring only an 8th standard qualification and explicitly disallowing candidates who had passed 12th standard or acquired higher degrees.

While acknowledging sympathy for the individual, the bench stated that the conduct and established legal principles left no option but to interfere with the lower court’s judgment.

The decision reinforces the principle that “the right person for the right place” does not always mean the most highly qualified, but rather those whose qualifications align with the role’s requirements.
