Ground Zero | Assam Flood Horror: Two Lives Lost in a Desperate Fight Against the Floodwaters

Sivasagar, Assam: NDS News Agency travelled to the flood-ravaged Chontok Bogdoi village in Nazira constituency, where the devastating floods of July 19 claimed two lives in a heartbreaking tragedy. Rahana Ara Ahmed, popularly known as Chinki, was swept away by the raging floodwaters. In a courageous attempt to save her, local youth Ratul Saora jumped into the water but also lost his life.

Weeks after the tragedy, grief continues to haunt the village as residents recount the terrifying moments when the flood turned fatal. Families say the disaster not only destroyed homes and livelihoods but also snatched away two young lives in a matter of minutes.

This exclusive Ground Zero report from NDS News Agency captures the human cost of Assam's devastating floods, bringing the voices of the victims' families and the reality of life in one of the worst-hit villages.

Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind Extends ₹1 Crore Flood Relief to Assam, Maulana Mostak Anfar Visits Nazira

Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind has announced ₹1 crore in flood relief for Assam under the direction of its central president, Maulana Syed Arshad Madani. As part of the relief initiative, Assam State Jamiat Ulema leader Maulana Mostak Anfar visited flood-hit Nazira in Upper Assam and said the assistance would be distributed among all flood-affected families, irrespective of religion or community.

Maulana Mustak Anfar Stands with Flood-Affected People of Upper Assam

Maulana Mustak Anfar arrived in Jorhat via Delhi after travelling from Dubai. From Jorhat, he proceeded directly to Nazira, where he distributed relief materials among flood-affected families.

It may be mentioned that Maulana Anfar has announced a total flood relief assistance of Rs 2.25 crore for people affected by the floods.

Acting on the instructions of Maulana Syed Arshad Madani, President of the Central Committee of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, Maulana Mustak Anfar of the Assam State Jamiat Ulema reached Nazira in Upper Assam on Thursday.

Speaking on the occasion, Maulana Anfar said that Rs 1 crore would be provided by Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, while an additional Rs 1.25 crore would be contributed by the Anfar Foundation, taking the total flood relief package to Rs 2.25 crore.

Also present at the event was Palash Dutta, Director of the NGO THA WAT NE.

The Assam State Jamiat Ulema also distributed notebooks, pens, pencil boxes, books and other educational materials among children in Nazira town.

Dikhow Flood Raises Questions Over Naga Hills Degradation

The devastating floods triggered by the Dikhow River have once again sparked a debate over the ecological destruction of the Naga Hills.

Massive landslides in Nagaland's Naganimora, Borjan and Landslip areas have left the hills scarred, with visuals showing large stretches of once-green forests now turned barren. As floodwaters surged downstream, the Dikhow River swelled, causing widespread devastation across Sivasagar district.

The flood washed away 86 houses at Nepali Khuti and around 120 houses at Kamal Chapori. Nearly 100 villages, including Majgaon, Ogurijan, Tengahola, Gosainbari, Simoluguri, Geleki, Nazira and several others, suffered extensive damage as thousands of people were affected.

The disaster has reignited questions over its real cause. Is the devastation solely the result of relentless rainfall? Or have large plywood industries operating along the Dikhow River in Nagaland's Mon district, coupled with rampant hill-cutting, stone quarrying and coal mining, worsened the situation by destabilising the fragile hills?

However, leaders of the Konya Union have rejected allegations linking Nagaland's activities to the floods in Assam.

Addressing a press conference, President Honneih Konyak, Vice President Wangkai Konyak, General Secretary Anyea Konyak and Secretary Chingh Konyak described the incident as a natural disaster. They alleged that certain groups are attempting to create division between Assam and Nagaland by blaming Nagaland for the floods.

The debate over environmental degradation and accountability is likely to intensify as affected residents in Assam continue to demand answers over what they describe as a recurring disaster.

Flood Took Her Home, But Not Her Dream: Assam’s Janmoni Returns With National Gold

NDS EXCLUSIVE | Seventeen-year-old Janmoni Konwar returned to Assam with a national gold medal but not to the home she left behind.

The devastating floods submerged her family’s house in 2 No. Mojia Bheti of Bhogdoiporia Gaon in Jorhat district, forcing the family to live under a tarpaulin shelter on an embankment since July 19. Their fishery, built over nearly three years, was badly damaged, while ducks and poultry were swept away. The family had planned to sell the fish to fund Janmoni’s journey to Delhi for the National Karate Championship.

The flood nearly washed away that dream too.

A karate practitioner since the age of five, Janmoni continued training despite displacement and uncertainty, practising on the embankment while her family struggled to survive. With travel to Delhi becoming difficult, help came from Physics Wallah founder Alakh Pandey, who sponsored the team’s travel, accommodation and return journey and also provided the family with ₹3 lakh. Union Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita also extended financial assistance.

Janmoni eventually reached Delhi and competed at the National Karate Championship at Talkatora Indoor Stadium from August 7 to 9.

She came back with GOLD.

On August 10, Janmoni returned to Assam through Dibrugarh Airport. Her victory homecoming, however, was unlike that of most champions. She returned not to a room, a bed or a permanent home, but to the tarpaulin tent where her family is still waiting to rebuild their lives.

Her gold medal cannot restore the house the flood destroyed or the livelihood the family lost.

But it stands as a powerful reminder that even when disaster takes almost everything away, it cannot always take away determination.

A home was lost. A livelihood was shattered. A dream survived. And Assam’s Janmoni returned with gold.

8 Assam Residents Injured in Border Firing Incident Along Assam–Arunachal Pradesh Boundary; Three Referred to AMCH

Eight residents of Assam sustained injuries in an alleged firing incident at Mingmang Badati under the Gogamukh Revenue Circle along the Assam–Arunachal Pradesh border on Tuesday. According to preliminary information, the incident reportedly stemmed from a dispute over alleged land encroachment, which escalated into violence.

All the injured were first taken to Gogamukh Rural Hospital. Seven were later referred to Dhemaji Civil Hospital for advanced treatment. Of them, three—identified as Bhaijan Doley, Utpal Doley, and Preme Pegu—were subsequently shifted to Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH), Dibrugarh, after their condition was reported to be critical.

Authorities are yet to issue an official statement, and the circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.

Assam Handball Scam? Players Allege ₹2 Lakh Demand, Bounced Cheque, Years of Unpaid Refunds

Serious allegations have been levelled against Assam Handball Association President Amal Narayan Patowary, with several players, including Roktim Ranjan Boruah, claiming they were asked to pay ₹2 lakh each on the promise of international tournament opportunities and reimbursement through government schemes. The players have shared a video call recording and a bounced cheque, alleging they are still waiting for their money years later. These are allegations, and NDS News Agency has sought a response from Amal Narayan Patowary. His version will be published upon receipt.
