On January 2, 2025, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma laid the foundation for a significant modernization project for the Assam State Zoo cm Botanical Garden in Guwahati. This project, with a financial outlay of Rs 362.04 crore, aims to transform the zoo into a state-of-the-art conservation center.

Additionally, the state government plans to establish two more zoos in Dibrugarh and Silchar, with budgets of Rs 259 crore and Rs 214 crore respectively. These new zoos will follow an open zoo model, promoting more natural environments for the animals.
The Chief Minister also announced the creation of an Institute of Wildlife and Health at Chabua to improve care for wild animals. He highlighted the state's progress in curbing poaching, with a Special Task Force handling cases involving elephants and tigers. Furthermore, over 74,000 bighas of encroached forest land have been cleared, aiding in wildlife population recovery.
