Nature Walk Observed on Indigenous Faith Day at Elopa Etugu Community Eco-Cultural Preserve by Idu Filmmaker Lisha Umpo.

Roing, 1 December 2025:
A Nature Walk was organised yesterday at the Elopa Etugu Community Eco-Cultural Preserve (EECEP), Roing, to commemorate Indigenous Faith Day. The programme was coordinated by Iho Mitapo, along with Community Ranger John, engaging 21 youths from Roing in an immersive exploration of their local ecological heritage.

During the walk, Lisha Umpo, the organiser of the event and a fellow with the National Youth Climate Consortium, facilitated her Nature Wall activity. This was part of her ongoing project focusing on the documentation of indigenous and native medicinal plants of Dibang Valley. Her engagement highlighted the importance of preserving traditional ecological knowledge and strengthening community-led conservation.

During the trail to Nizam Ghat, Rudrangshu Roy and Subradip Nath from NE Narrative jointly interacted with the youth. Their session emphasised nature connection, early signs of climate change, and the pivotal role of indigenous communities in safeguarding cultural and ecological roots. Their combined inputs encouraged the young participants to view conservation as both a responsibility and a lived cultural practice.

The programme successfully strengthened youth awareness around biodiversity, indigenous identity, and the significance of community-driven ecological stewardship. The walk reaffirmed the shared commitment to protecting the cultural landscapes and natural heritage of the Idu Mishmi region.

An extraordinary chapter of Walong Day 2025 concluded with the successful completion of the exclusive Jachep Tso High Mountain Trek — a route that opens only during this commemorative period.

This year, 20 trekkers — including civilians and Indian Army personnel — covered over 100 km, beginning from Kaho and moving through Sheru, Malinja, the high-altitude hot spring, and finally reaching Jachep Camp at 4,200m, standing at the remarkable tri-junction of India–Tibet–Myanmar.

The journey unfolded across shifting landscapes — pine forests, maple and birch valleys, bamboo groves, rocky riverbeds, moss-laden forest floors, fresh landslides and long snow-covered stretches leading to Jachep Tso.
Trekkers witnessed transitions from subtropical to temperate to alpine zones, followed the dramatic course of the Dichu River, recorded rich birdlife, and walked through valleys brimming with Eastern Himalayan flora.

A rare highlight was the natural hot spring at 3,300m and the unforgettable night skies — from full moon glow to a star-filled, pristine Milky Way as the moon waned.

What made this journey truly meaningful was the time spent with the Indian Army, whose support, guidance and stories deepened the bond between trekkers and soldiers living in these remote high mountain frontiers.

The 12-day expedition became more than a trek — it became a walk through history, landscapes and the resilient spirit of the people who guard this land.

A journey of discovery, connection, and tribute — in honor of Walong and its heroes.
