Vadodara city police arrested six men on Wednesday for trying to sell ambergris, a rare and expensive substance often called “whale vomit.” The police received a tip-off that the accused were moving around Bil village with the item in a car. They acted quickly and stopped the vehicle. Upon checking, they found the ambergris hidden inside.

The seized ambergris is valued at over ₹1.58 crore. The six men arrested have been identified as Surendra Chavda, Gautam Vasava, Deepak Rabari, Siddharth Tadvi, Surajsinh Kamboj, and Raju Bharwad. Police said they were trying to find a buyer in Vadodara when they were caught.

Ambergris is a substance formed inside the intestines of s***m whales when they consume things they cannot digest. It is used mainly in making perfumes and some medicines because of its strong smell and rare qualities. However, its trade is banned in India under the Wildlife Protection Act, as whales are a protected species.

Police are now investigating how the men got hold of the ambergris and whether a larger gang is involved. Officials are also checking if the substance came from Indian waters or was smuggled from outside the country. Further legal action will be taken after the investigation is complete.

Starting Thursday, telecom users across India will no longer hear the cybercrime awareness message voiced by Amitabh Bachchan before making a call. The long-running campaign, aimed at alerting the public about online frauds, has officially concluded, according to an NDTV report. Introduced as a government initiative, the message was part of a broader effort to increase vigilance among mobile users in the face of rising cybercrime incidents.

Despite its noble intent, the message had drawn widespread criticism from users for its repetitive nature. Social media platforms were flooded with reactions of relief after the announcement. Several users shared humorous and sarcastic takes on the news, calling it a “huge relief.” Comments like “Itni khushi aaj tak ni mili jitni is news se mili h” and “Thank god… that was a big torture” highlighted the extent of public fatigue over the pre-call message.

Veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan also addressed the criticism earlier this week. Responding to a social media user who asked him to stop the message, Bachchan quipped, “Sarkar ko bolo bhai, unhone jo kaha humne kar diya,” implying that he had only fulfilled a government request. His light-hearted response resonated with fans and critics alike, softening some of the backlash while underlining that he was merely the messenger.

With the campaign now concluded, Bachchan continues to focus on his film career. He was last seen in the film Vettaiyan alongside Rajinikanth, Fahadh Faasil, and Rana Daggubati. Looking ahead, he is set to star with Deepika Padukone in the highly anticipated Hindi remake of The Intern. While his caller tune may no longer ring out across India, Amitabh Bachchan’s presence remains strong on the silver screen.

In a significant breakthrough for Indian lepidopterology, researchers have confirmed the first-ever sighting of the Chinese Rose Windmill (Byasa genestieri) in India. Previously known only from regions like Yunnan, Sichuan, Laos, and northern Vietnam, this swallowtail butterfly has now been recorded in the remote high-altitude valley of Mechuka in central Arunachal Pradesh. The discovery was made during a reconnaissance survey ahead of the upcoming Butterfly and Biodiversity Meet, by Dr. Monsoon J. Gogoi and Yumlam Benjamin Bida of ATREE, and Tajum Yomcha, a Research Officer from the PCCF office in Itanagar.

This species, a close relative of the native Rose Windmill (Byasa latreillei), can be distinguished by its darker blackish base colour, prominent white discal spots on its hindwings, and deep pink submarginal markings. “It’s a stunning species,” said Dr. Gogoi, describing the butterfly as a striking find both in form and ecological significance. Until now, Byasa latreillei was the only known representative of this genus in India, occurring across the Himalayas from Uttarakhand to western Arunachal, and in parts of Nagaland and Manipur.

The sighting of Byasa genestieri fills a crucial ecological gap and further emphasizes the importance of Mechuka as a biodiversity hotspot. Located deep within the Eastern Himalayas, Mechuka’s unique microclimate and elevation range likely support a variety of high-altitude butterfly species previously undocumented in India. The finding reinforces the value of continued scientific exploration in remote border landscapes, especially in regions where accessibility has traditionally limited ecological research.

This discovery also brings renewed focus to the upcoming high-altitude Butterfly and Biodiversity Meet in Mechuka. Designed to promote butterfly tourism as a conservation-led livelihood for local communities, the event now carries the added excitement of this rare record. “These spectacular species are ambassadors of fragile ecosystems,” said Tajum Yomcha, adding that such discoveries highlight the ecological and economic potential of conservation-oriented ecotourism in Arunachal’s pristine landscapes.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday visited the construction site of the upcoming trumpet junction near the Brahmaputra River, a crucial infrastructure component of the new bridge linking Guwahati with North Guwahati.

During the visit, the Chief Minister reviewed the status of the work and urged officials to expedite construction activities. He expressed hope that the bridge would be ready for use by December this year or January next year. Even if the trumpet junction is not fully completed by then, the bridge will be operational, allowing smoother travel between Guwahati and North Guwahati.

Until the trumpet junction is completed, vehicles will be diverted through IIT Guwahati and GNRC to connect to the National Highway. The junction is expected to be finished by May or June next year, after which traffic movement will become more streamlined and direct.

CM Sarma was accompanied by senior officials including Bibhuti Saikia, Special Commissioner of PWD (Roads), and Kamrup Deputy Commissioner Deba Kumar Mishra.

The bridge and the trumpet junction are part of a broader initiative aimed at enhancing connectivity and reducing travel time between both banks of the Brahmaputra in the Guwahati region.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that the newly constructed flyover near Downtown Hospital Point in Guwahati will be officially inaugurated on July 6, 2025. This new infrastructure project is part of the government’s broader push to improve urban mobility and reduce traffic bottlenecks in key parts of the city.

The flyover, which begins near Downtown and ends 130 metres before the existing Six Mile flyover, spans a total length of 950 metres. It has been strategically designed to decongest one of the city’s most traffic-prone stretches, offering smoother and faster connectivity for daily commuters.

Once operational, the flyover is expected to significantly reduce travel time and ease vehicle flow along this busy corridor. It will not only benefit local residents but also those commuting to and from major hospitals, educational institutions, and business centres located in the vicinity.

The project underscores the Assam government’s commitment to enhancing the city’s infrastructure and providing long-term solutions to traffic challenges. With the inauguration scheduled for early July, the flyover is set to become a vital link in Guwahati’s growing network of road infrastructure.

Jahnavi Dangeti, a 23-year-old space enthusiast from West Godavari district in Andhra Pradesh, has been chosen as an astronaut candidate for the 2029 space mission of Titan Space Industries (TSI), a private space agency based in the United States. Her selection marks a proud moment for India, as she becomes one of the few Indians selected for such an important international mission.

TSI confirmed that Jahnavi is now part of their new ASCAN (astronaut candidate) training group. Starting in 2026, she will undergo three years of intensive training, including flight simulation, survival training, medical exams, and spacecraft procedures. The space mission in 2029 will last five hours and will take place aboard Titan’s orbital port space station. The mission will be led by retired NASA astronaut Colonel William McArthur Jr.

Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu congratulated Jahnavi on social media, calling her achievement a moment of pride for all Indians. He also highlighted that she is the first Indian to complete NASA’s International Air & Space Programme. Her journey inspires many young Indians to dream big and aim for space.

After 41 years since Rakesh Sharma’s historic flight in 1984, India has marked a new milestone in space. Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla of the Indian Air Force became the second Indian to enter space and the first to reach the International Space Station (ISS). He launched from Florida’s Kennedy Space Center aboard SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft as part of Axiom Space’s Ax-4 mission.

Shukla’s journey was not easy — the launch faced seven delays due to technical issues and weather conditions. But on June 25, the Falcon-9 rocket finally lifted off, sending him and his international crewmates on their 14-day space mission. The crew includes American astronaut Peggy Whitson, Poland’s Sawosz Uznanski, and Hungary’s Tibor Kapu. While the spacecraft flies mostly on autopilot, Shukla serves as the mission’s pilot and backup manual operator.

During the mission, Shukla will conduct seven experiments designed by Indian scientists. These include growing Indian crops like moong and methi in space, studying microbes, researching muscle loss, and testing mental health effects in zero gravity. These studies will help India prepare for future deep space missions, including ISRO’s upcoming Gaganyaan human spaceflight program, for which Shukla is also a shortlisted astronaut.

As the Dragon spacecraft docks with the ISS, a proud nation watches. Shukla’s mission symbolizes a leap forward for India’s space ambitions, science research, and global collaboration. He now carries the hopes of 1.4 billion Indians — a living reminder that with courage and preparation, space is no longer the final frontier, but the next destination.

The United States Embassy in India has announced a new guideline for those applying for F, M, and J nonimmigrant visas. Applicants are now required to make all their personal social media accounts public. This step is aimed at helping officials verify the identity and eligibility of each applicant as part of national security screening.

The embassy clarified that this rule takes effect immediately and applies to Indian students and others planning to study, undergo vocational training, or participate in exchange programs in the U.S. If an applicant fails to set their social media accounts to “public,” their visa could be denied. The embassy posted this update on X (formerly Twitter), stating that every visa decision is a national security matter.

The U.S. has required visa applicants to list social media identifiers since 2019. Now, with the privacy setting requirement added, authorities will use publicly visible information to assess whether someone poses any risk or is eligible to enter the country. However, the embassy has not detailed exactly what content or behavior could lead to rejection.

This move is part of a broader change in U.S. visa policy. Similar instructions have been issued by other American embassies worldwide, including in Mexico. The policy update follows recent decisions by the U.S. government to strengthen its screening process, including temporarily halting and then resuming student visa appointments with tougher social media checks in place.
