Despite Madhya Pradesh improving from the first to the second position in terms of infant mortality rates, the issue remains a matter of concern. Currently, 35 out of every 1,000 newborns in the state do not survive their first month. While infant deaths have decreased in districts like Alirajpur, regions such as Khargone, Barwani, Anuppur, and Shivpuri continue to report high numbers.
The primary reasons for these infant deaths include infections, pre-term births, low birth weight, and issues related to IVF. To tackle these challenges, it is important for doctors and nursing staff to receive training in the use of new technologies. A common misconception is that infants catch infections from their mothers, but experts clarify that infections often occur during delivery.
This concern was discussed at the three-day NEOCON (Neonatology) Conference in Indore, where neonatologists emphasized the importance of addressing birth-related complications. One such complication is birth asphyxia, a condition where the infant doesn't cry or breathe at birth, leading to oxygen deprivation in the brain. This can result in conditions like mental disabilities and weakness, as the child's brain doesn't fully develop.
Dr. Naveen Jain (from Trivandrum) highlighted that advancements in technology have made newborn and pre-term baby care much more effective. Modern NICUs (Neonatal Intensive Care Units) now replicate the environment of the mother's womb. New advanced incubators can play recorded sounds of the mother's heartbeat and blood flow, helping pre-term and newborn babies feel like they are still in the womb. This helps the babies relax and sleep better, giving them a sense of comfort similar to being inside the mother’s womb.
These technological advancements and innovations in neonatal care are expected to play a crucial role in reducing infant mortality rates in Madhya Pradesh.
