Assistant Jailor of Haflong Sub-Jail Suspended After Inmate Escape Incident

The Government of Assam has placed Shri Kalyan Kumar, Assistant Jailor of Sub-Jail, Haflong, under suspension with immediate effect following the escape of an under-trial prisoner (UTP) from the jail premises.

According to reports submitted by the District Commissioner, Dima Hasao, and the Superintendent of Sub-Jail, Haflong, the inmate, identified as Betsing Jidung @ Khurang, escaped from the jail on November 5, 2025, at around 12:09 pm.

The Assam Prison Headquarters, Khanapara, Guwahati, issued the suspension order on November 6, 2025, citing Kalyan Kumar as responsible for the incident. The order, signed by the Inspector General of Prisons, Assam, stated that disciplinary proceedings will follow, and the suspension will remain in force until further orders.

Assembly Constituency Increase Demand Committee (ACIDC) demand Immediate increase in Assembly Constituency in Dima Hasao district based on hill-status basis before the upcoming Assembly election.
It may be noted here that Assembly constituency of Dima Hasao (erstwhile North Cachar Hills) was established in 1951 but more than 73 years later there is only one assembly constituency in the district. When the Assembly constituencies were increased in the Sixth Schedule areas of Assam in 1962 and 1972, there was no increase in Dima Hasao. Then in Assam Delimitation 2023, when assembly constituencies were carved in the Sixth Schedule areas, the increase in assembly constituencies in Dima Hasao was rejected on the grounds that Dima Hasao has the lowest population density as per the EC report, which is a gross injustice to Dima Hasao. The truth is that if the government wants to increase the number of assembly constituencies on the basis of highest population density, why didn't the Government increase the number of assembly constituencies in the highest population density areas like Guwahati metropolitan areas? And if the government gives priority to tribal backward areas with fewer assembly constituencies, why didn't the government increase the number of assembly constituencies in tribal backward areas like Dima Hasao? In 1969, Dima Hasao was given the option of remaining in Assam or joining Meghalaya, but Dima Hasao remained in Assam. Moreover, Dima Hasao is a truly hilly district and the main Sixth Schedule area of ​​Assam, which requires increase of its Assembly constituency with 'special consideration' Now most people believe that if Dima Hasao had joined Meghalaya in 1969, the number of assembly constituencies in Dima Hasao district would have increased from 4 to 5, while Dima Hasao has now only one assembly constituency.
Moreover, the total voters of Dima Hasao( 113-Haflong -ST LAC) is more than 1, 45, 000 voters while the Lakshadweep MP Lok Sabha Constituency is about 60,000 voters.
Hence, the demand for Increase of Assembly constituencies in Dima Hasao district before the upcoming Assembly election.
