Dimasa Textbooks Unveiled Under NEP 2020 Vision”
DIPR, Haflong, June 14: A ceremonial launch of textbooks for foundational stage was unveiled today at Cultural Institute Hall. The Chief guest of the programme C.E.M. of North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council, along with his team of legislators officially graced the occasion. The headmaster of five lower primary schools received ceremonially distributed books.
Recently, the Government of Assam designated 278 L.P. Schools in Dima Hasao as Dimasa Medium Lower Primary Schools. Starting from the academic session 2025-26, the foundational course textbook in the Dimasa language will be introduced as the medium of instruction in these schools. According to CEM Debolal Gorlosa, the launch of these foundational stage textbooks has been long overdue and should have been implemented much earlier.
One of the standout features of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 is the promotion of mother tongues and local languages as the medium of instruction, especially at the foundational and primary stages. However, to achieve the desired outcomes, it requires support from individuals across various sectors, according to Gorlosa. He also expressed gratitude to the Dimasa Sahitya Sabha, its Sub-Committee, the Dimasa Language Committee, civil societies & other organizations that participated in this effort. Gorlosa emphasized that many members of the Kachari community have lost their language, and losing a language is akin to losing one's identity. He hopes to see the Dimasa language thrive from this point onward and has urged everyone to work towards including Dimasa in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
Donpainon Thaosen, Executive Member in charge of Education, expressed his gratitude for being invited to this significant event. He noted that the original proposal for Dimasa Medium Lower Primary Schools was for 282 schools. However, only 278 were approved by the competent authority because four schools did not have a UDISE code.
The Dimasa language, known to its native speakers as Grao-Dima, is a Tibeto-Burman language spoken primarily by the Dimasa people in Assam and parts of Nagaland. It holds deep historical and cultural significance, being one of the oldest languages in Northeast India.
The Event was attended by Chairman Mohet Hojai, Executive members, Member of Autonomous councils, Joint Secretary & i/c Education Rebecca Changsan, former ACS officer and president of Dimasa Sahitya Sabha Ramesh Thaosen, Medhabi Thaosen District Primary Education Officer, Purabi Phonglo, DIPRO other officials and various Civil Societies, Teachers etc.
