For years, I thought my hair was just... frizzy.
So I brushed it harder, straightened it more often, tied it up, and assumed it was simply unmanageable.
It took me years to realize that my hair wasn’t trying to be straight, it was wavy. And it wasn’t asking to be fixed; it was asking to be understood.
Looking back, I wish someone had simply told me that “frizzy” isn’t a hair type.
I think that’s the confusing part about having wavy hair. It isn’t quite straight, and it isn’t quite curly either. So many of us grow up not knowing what our hair actually needs. We compare it to straight hair because it looks smoother, or curly hair because it has defined ringlets, and our own texture ends up feeling like it’s doing neither “properly.”
Once I stopped fighting it and started caring for it like wavy hair; something Alchemic Beauty | Curly Hair & Color Salon first pointed out to me during a haircut; everything slowly changed. Not overnight, and definitely not because of one miracle product, but because I finally understood my hair a little better.
If you have long, fine wavy hair that’s easily weighed down, these are a few brands that have worked well for me (I’ve tagged the ones I’ve personally used):
• The Curl Co. ➿Curly Wavy Haircare
• Fix My Curls ➰ Curly and Wavy Hair Care
• Moxie Beauty
• Ashba Botanics
• Curl Up
And to be honest, I don’t always have the energy for a full styling routine. On lazy hair days, my shortcut is Dove India Peptide Bond Strength Leave-in Crème Serum on soaking wet hair, followed by lorealindia Extraordinary Oil Serum once my hair dries. It doesn’t give me my most defined waves, but it keeps the frizz in check and leaves my hair looking healthy.
I’m still learning, but I genuinely enjoy my hair so much more now.
If you’ve spent years calling your hair “frizzy,” maybe it’s worth asking if it’s actually been wavy all along. 🤍
I’m always looking for products that work well for wavy hair, so if you’ve found one you swear by, I’d love to hear about it in the comments!
