Srinagar Police Solve Blind Murder Case Within Hours, Arrest Mother-Son Duo
Victim Identified as Nazir Ahmad Bhat; Police Say Financial Dispute Led to Killing, Body Dumped in Babademb Canal
Srinagar, Aug 1: Srinagar Police on Saturday claimed to have cracked a blind murder case within hours of recovering an unidentified body, arresting a mother and her son for allegedly murdering a man over a financial dispute and disposing of his body in the Babademb Canal.
According to police, an unidentified body wrapped in gunny bags was found beneath Baba Dawood Khakhi Bridge in the Babademb Canal under the jurisdiction of Police Station Khanyar. Following the recovery, police registered FIR No. 49/2026 under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and launched a detailed investigation.
Considering the gravity of the crime, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was constituted under the supervision of senior officers. Using technical evidence, sustained investigation and corroborative leads, the team identified the accused as Haleema Bano and her son Moomin Ahmad, originally from Machil, Kupwara, who had been residing as tenants in Mughal Mohalla, Rainawari.
Police said the accused allegedly fled Srinagar after the incident in an attempt to evade arrest. However, the investigating team tracked them down and arrested both from Lolab, Kupwara, within hours of the body's recovery.
During the investigation, the deceased was identified as Nazir Ahmad Bhat, son of Ghulam Mohammad Bhat, a resident of Kalantpora, Hawal. Preliminary findings indicate that he was allegedly murdered inside the rented accommodation of the accused following a financial dispute.
Police said the accused allegedly wrapped the body in gunny bags and dumped it into the canal in an attempt to destroy evidence and conceal the crime. Investigators have also recovered several incriminating articles believed to be linked to the offence.
Further investigation is underway to determine whether any other individuals were involved, while police said the swift detection of the case reflects the coordinated efforts and professionalism of the investigating team.
