Mamdani Opposes Mohan Bhagwat’s NYC Event, But Says City May Not Have Power To Cancel.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has opposed the planned August 29 event at Madison Square Garden featuring RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, who is expected to address around 5,000 members of the Indian diaspora as part of the organisation’s centenary-year outreach. Mamdani said his opposition was shaped by his belief in a pluralistic, secular India and his concerns over what he described as an exclusionary political movement.
However, Mamdani stopped short of calling for city intervention, saying he did not know whether New York City had jurisdiction to cancel a private event. His remarks come as interfaith and civil rights groups, including Hindus for Human Rights and the Indian American Muslim Council, have called for the event to be cancelled.
