Why Are Students and Activists Protesting?
Students and environmental activists argue that the land, whether officially classified as forest or not, is a thriving ecosystem and should be protected. They cite a 1996 Supreme Court ruling (T N Godavarman Thirumulpad vs Union of India), which states that any land with forest cover qualifies as ‘forest land,’ even if it is not officially notified as one.
Activists under the “Save City Forest” campaign also stress that clearing land with Schedule-I protected species without a proper Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) or environmental clearance is illegal.
Students have also accused the government of rushing the clearance to remove evidence of biodiversity before an upcoming court hearing on April 7. A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has already been filed by environmental activist Uday Krishna to declare the area an ecologically sensitive zone.
