The four leaders are Anam Ramnarayana Reddy, Kotamreddy Sridhar Reddy, Mekapati Chandrasekhar Reddy, and Undavalli Sridevi

Amaravati: Four rebel MLAs who were said to be involved in cross-voting in the MLC elections have been suspended from the YSRCP for violating the Whip issued by the party.

The four leaders are Anam Ramnarayana Reddy, Kotamreddy Sridhar Reddy, Mekapati Chandrasekhar Reddy, and Undavalli Sridevi

A day before, on Thursday, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) nominee Panchumarthi Anuradha won one of the MLC seats under the MLA quota by a margin of 23 votes, while the YSRCP won six other MLC seats. Though the TDP won 23 MLA seats in 2019, four MLAs shifted to YSRCP. Yet, the TDP has managed to get 23 votes in this election.

This year, Anuradha only had the support of 19 MLAs, and an MLC needs 22 votes to win.

YSRCP expected cross-voting by Sridhar Reddy and Ramnarayan Reddy, however, the names of the other two MLAs came as a shock. YSRCP believes that these four leaders cross-voted in the MLC elections.

“We did some internal investigation, and the party is convinced that the four MLAs crossed the line and did cross-voting. After discussing with the senior leaders, party president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has decided to suspend them,” government advisor Sajjala Ramakrishna Reddy told the media.

Further, he said, “According to our information, the party believes that money has changed hands. TDP chief Nara Chandrababu is said to have offered Rs. 15 to 20 crores to each MLA. He might have said that they will also give tickets to those who cross-voted.

CM KCR announces financial assistance of Rs 228 crore to rain-hit farmers

CM KCR announced a relief and rehabilitation assistance of Rs.10,000 per acre, which is higher than Central recommendations, for the crops damaged due to the recent hailstorms and unseasonal rains in Telangana

Hyderabad: Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao announced a relief and rehabilitation assistance of Rs.10,000 per acre, which is higher than Central recommendations, for the crops damaged due to the recent hailstorms and unseasonal rains in Telangana. Orders were issued sanctioning Rs.228.25 crore for distribution of the financial assistance to farmers on Thursday evening itself.

Speaking to the media on Thursday, the Chief Minister said the financial assistance would be offered equally to all crops. Standing crops in around 2.28 lakh acres, including 1.29 lakh acres of maize, 72,709 acres of paddy, 8,865 acres of mango and 17,238 acres of other crops, were damaged.

We will extend an amount of Rs.228 crore as relief and rehabilitation support to farmers. The entire amount will be borne by the State government, without seeking the Centre’s help,” Chandrashekhar Rao said. Chief Secretary A Santhi Kumari was directed to issue necessary orders in this connection.

Earlier, Chandrashekhar Rao toured the four affected districts of Khammam, Mahabubabad, Warangal and Karimnagar and conducted an aerial survey of the agricultural lands to examine the damaged crops. He also interacted with farmers who suffered severe losses due to hailstorms and rains. Steps would be taken to see that tenant farmers would receive the financial support extended by the government by making required amendments in the rules, the Chief Minister said.

“We have come a long way through numerous initiatives like Rythu Bandhu, Rythu Bima, free power and water supply to support our farmers and make agriculture profitable. We do not want this progress go waste. Hence, the State government will bear the entire amount to support our farmers,” he said.

A local court in Surat on Thursday convicted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in a criminal defamation case for his remarks on "Modi surname" during an election campaign in 2019

The court sentenced Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to two years imprisonment under sections 499 and 504. The sentence has been suspended for a month after an appeal was filed for the same.

The Congress leader has also been granted bail.

The case was filed against Gandhi for his alleged “how come all the thieves have Modi as the common surname?” remarks on a complaint lodged by Surat BJP MLA and former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi. Modi had claimed that Gandhi's remarks "defamed" the entire Modi community

The Lok Sabha MP from Wayanad made the alleged remarks while addressing a rally at Kolar in Karnataka ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, while referring to "Nirav Modi, Lalit Modi and Narendra Modi... how come they all have common surnames? How come all the thieves have Modi as surnames?"

The case was filed under IPC sections 499, 500 (for criminal defamation), and 504 on a complaint lodged by BJP MLA and former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi.

The court had last week concluded hearing final arguments from both sides and set March 23 to pronounce its judgment in the four-year-old defamation case
