🚨AFTERSHOCKS ROCKS Kamchatka Following Massive 8.8 Magnitude Earthquake.

PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, RUSSIA – The magnitude 8.8 earthquake that struck off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula on July 29, 2025 (UTC, which was July 30 local time in Kamchatka) was a massive seismic event, considered among the top ten strongest recorded since 1900. As expected with an earthquake of this magnitude, it was followed by a significant number of aftershocks.

Count: Within the first 16 hours, over 125 aftershocks of magnitude 4.4 or greater were recorded. This indicates a high frequency of subsequent tremors.

Aftershocks: Among these, several were quite powerful, with some reaching magnitudes as high as 6.9. The USGS specifically reported 24 aftershocks exceeding magnitude 5.0, including the M6.9 tremor.

Risk: Seismologists have warned that aftershocks could continue for days or even weeks, with the potential for tremors up to magnitude 7.5. This highlights the ongoing seismic activity and the need for continued caution in the affected region.

Context: The earthquake occurred in a subduction zone along the Kuril-Kamchatka Trench, where the Pacific Plate dives beneath the Okhotsk microplate. This type of "megathrust" earthquake involves a large rupture on the shallow portion of the subduction interface, which is why it generated such a powerful main shock and numerous aftershocks. The sequence and location of the aftershocks indicate that the earthquake rupture was approximately 500 kilometers long.

Tsunami warnings and watches have also been issued for Japan, Hawaii, parts of Alaska, and other areas of the Pacific, including the US West Coast.

:

Towns or cities where the quake likely caused strong ground shaking include.
