Iraq – Thousands of mourners gathered in Karbala on Tuesday evening as the lights between the shrines of Syedina Imam Hussein A.S and Hazrat Abbas A.s turned red, marking the symbolic start of Muharram.

The annual light-changing ceremony at Bayn al-Haramayn, the area between the two holy shrines, signals the beginning of the Islamic month of mourning. For Muslims worldwide, Muharram commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad Peace be upon Him, and his 72 companions in the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE.

Security has been tightened across Karbala as pilgrims continue to arrive ahead of Ashura. Local authorities said special arrangements have been made for food, medical aid, and crowd management.

This marks one of the largest annual religious gatherings in the world, with millions expected in Karbala over the next two weeks.
