For years, many traditional Indian fashion and beauty practices were seen as outdated—until the West repackaged them as the next big trend. From our dupattas becoming “Scandinavian scarves” to champi turning into slick-back buns and Kolhapuris appearing on luxury runways, familiar Indian aesthetics are getting a global makeover. But this raises an important question: Is it cultural appreciation, or does Indian culture only become fashionable once it receives Western validation?
