Manipur, once celebrated as the "jewel of India's Northeast," is now engulfed in a severe humanitarian and ethnic crisis. Despite the imposition of President's Ruleβa constitutional step meant to restore orderβthe conflict between the Meitei and Kuki communities persists. The unrest, which escalated into widespread violence and displacement, stems from deep-rooted historical grievances and recent political developments. The immediate spark was a 2023 Manipur High Court directive urging the inclusion of Meiteis in the Scheduled Tribes (ST) list. This move alarmed tribal communities, especially the Kukis, who feared losing land rights, reservation benefits, and socio-political space. The central government's intervention has so far failed to resolve the crisis, leaving the state in turmoil.
