On 9 October 2017, India faced Colombia in the FIFA U-17 World Cup at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi. Trailing 1–0 late in the game, India won a corner in the 82nd minute. Jeakson Singh Thounaojam rose above the Colombian defence and headed the ball into the net, becoming the first Indian footballer to score in a FIFA World Cup tournament. The historic goal sparked celebrations inside a packed stadium and gave Indian football one of its most iconic moments.

Born in Thoubal, Manipur, Jeakson Singh Thounaojam's journey to that moment was shaped by determination and resilience. After being left out of the national squad during the early stages of preparation, Jeakson Singh Thounaojam continued to impress at youth level and earned a place back in India's FIFA U-17 World Cup squad through consistent performances.

Although Colombia scored again a minute later to win the match 2–1, the result could not overshadow the significance of Jeakson Singh Thounaojam's header. It remains India's first and only goal in a FIFA World Cup tournament, securing Jeakson Singh Thounaojam's place in the history of Indian football.
