1974 में फिल्म Gopal से अपने फिल्मी सफर की शुरुआत करने वाले Rakesh Roshan ने 80 से ज्यादा फिल्मों में काम किया। बतौर अभिनेता उन्होंने कई यादगार किरदार निभाए, लेकिन असली पहचान उन्हें एक निर्देशक के रूप में मिली।

B. R. Chopra was a pioneering figure in post-independent cinema who is known for making deep, meaningful, and often experimental films, well within the realms of commercial cinema. Some of his famous films include Afsana (1951), 'Naya Daur' (1957), 'Dhool Ka Phool' (1959), 'Kanoon' (1960), 'Gumrah' (1963), 'Hamraaz' (1967), and many more.

Baldev Raj Chopra was born on April 22, 1914, in Rahon, Punjab, into the family of an employee of the PWD, Vilayati Raj Chopra. Chopra completed his MA in English literature from the University of the Punjab in Lahore before joining "Cine Herald," a monthly published in Lahore, as a journalist; later, he also served as its editor until 1947.

Chopra's first film was "Chandni Chowk (1947). After partition, he came to Delhi and finally settled in Mumbai, where he made "Karwat(1949), starring Jeevan and Leela Misra.

His first success came in 1951 with the Ashok Kumar starrer 'Afsana' (1951), a drama about twins featuring Ashok Kumar in a dual role that was a trendsetter for its time. BR later remade it with Dilip Kumar as Dastaan (1972).

Afsana was followed by Shole (1953) and Chandni Chowk (1954). He established his own production house, B.R. Films, in 1955. Ek Hi Raasta (1956), starring Meena Kumari, Ashok Kumar, and Sunil Dutt, was his first film as a producer. In 1957, the best film of his career, "Naya Daur," made him one of the top filmmakers of the era.

His next film, Sadhna (1958), addressed the taboo issue of prostitution; this film earned a Filmfare Best Film nomination and was later remade as 'Tawaif'. In 1960, BR came up with "Kanoon," a courtroom drama that was ahead of its time, being India's first song-less talkie.

BR continues to direct hit after hit with films like Gumrah (1963), Hamraaz (1967), Ittefaq (1969), Dhund (1973), Pati Patni Aur Woh (1978), Insaf Ka Tarazu (1980), Nikaah (1982), and Tawaif (1985). BR Chopra also produced a number of iconic films, which were directed by his brother Yash Chopra and later by his son Ravi Chopra.

Yash Chopra started his career as an assistant director but soon became a legendary filmmaker in his own right. BR produced his directorial debut, 'Dhool Ka Phool (1957), a story about a Muslim man bringing up an "illegitimate" Hindu child. The film has the classic song Too Hindu Banega Na Musalman Banega," followed by Dharmputra (1961) where a Hindu family brings up an illegitimate Muslim child. Yash later directed movies like Waqt (1965) and Aadmi Aur Insaan (1970) for BR Chopra.

Ravi Chopra, B.R. Chopra's son, made his directorial debut with BR Films's Zameer (1974) and went on to direct films like The Burning Train (1980), Mazdoor (1983), Aaj Ki Awaaz (1984), Dahleez (1986), Pratigyabadh (1991), Kal Ki Awaz (1992), Baghban (2003), and Babul (2006) for BR Chopra. B. R. Chopra also produced Chhoti Si Baat (1976), directed by Basu Chatterjee.

Later in his career, BR Chopra produced the epic serial "Mahabharat" for Doordarshan, which was directed by Ravi Chopra.

One of the most famous incidents involving BR Chopra was the boycott of Mohammad Rafi over some misunderstanding. BR famously said that he would make another Rafi and would never work with him. After that, BR started promoting Mahendra Kapoor, a disciple of Rafi himself. But after just a few years, he has to bring back Rafi to sing the title track of "Waqt."

BR Chopra was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1998, followed by Padma Bhushan in 2001. Chopra passed away in Mumbai at 94 on November 5, 2008, leaving behind his son Ravi and daughters Shashi and Bina.

Few names in the history of Indian cinema carry the dignity, courage and pioneering spirit of Durga Khote.

Born on 14 January 1905 in Bombay, Durga Khote entered an industry at a time when acting was still considered an unconventional profession for women from respectable families. Yet she chose the path of cinema and went on to become one of the most respected actresses of her generation.

Her early screen journey included Farebi Jaal (1931), followed by V. Shantaram’s Ayodhyecha Raja (1932) — regarded as the first Marathi talkie and one of the landmark films of early Indian sound cinema.

From pioneering leading roles in films such as Amar Jyoti and Maya Machhindra, she gradually established herself as an extraordinary character actress. Her unforgettable portrayal of Jodha Bai in K. Asif’s Mughal-e-Azam (1960) remains one of the defining performances of her illustrious career.

🌿 a legacy far beyond the screen

Durga Khote was not merely an actress. She also worked in Marathi theatre, directed plays, participated in socially relevant theatre and later established Durga Khote Productions, contributing to advertising and short-film production. She also authored her autobiography, Mee Durga Khote, in 1982.

Her journey opened doors for generations of women who followed.

Durga Khote passed away on 22 September 1991, but the pioneering spirit with which she entered Indian cinema continues to live on. Today, we remember a woman who did not simply become part of Indian cinema’s history — she helped make that history possible. 🙏🌹
