Assam,Dec 14: A retired junior warrant officer of the Indian Air Force (IAF) has been arrested in Assamโ€™s Tezpur on charges of espionage and allegedly passing sensitive defence-related information to Pakistan, police confirmed on Saturday.

The accused, identified as Kulendra Sharma, has been booked under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for waging war against the nation, criminal conspiracy, acts endangering Indiaโ€™s sovereignty and integrity, and destruction of evidence.

Sonitpur district Deputy Superintendent of Police (Border), Haricharan Bhumij, said multiple electronic devices, including mobile phones and laptops, were seized from Sharmaโ€™s possession during the arrest. Preliminary examination of the gadgets reportedly revealed that the accused had shared confidential defence-related documents with a Pakistani intelligence agency.

โ€œInitial findings indicate that crucial information linked to national security was transmitted through digital platforms. The identity of the handlers and other possible links is currently under verification,โ€ DSP Bhumij said, adding that Sharma allegedly received instructions via WhatsApp. All seized devices will be sent for detailed forensic examination.

Police sources said Sharma was taken into custody from his residence at Patiachuburi in Tezpur following specific intelligence inputs regarding his suspected foreign links. Sharma retired from the IAF in 2002 and later worked as a technical assistant in the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering at Tezpur University. He resigned from the post around three years ago.

Meanwhile, police have also made multiple espionage-related arrests in Arunachal Pradesh in recent weeks. Four individuals have been taken into custody, three of whom are residents of Kupwara district in Jammu and Kashmir, while the identity of the fourth has not yet been disclosed.

Among those arrested is Hilal Ahmad (26), a resident of J&K, who was apprehended from Aalo in West Siang district. Police said Hilal had arrived in the area in late November to sell garments at a trade fair and was allegedly transmitting sensitive information to his handlers. Another suspect was arrested from Miao in Changlang district.

Earlier, on November 22, Itanagar police arrested Nazir Ahmad Malik and Sabir Ahmed Mir, both from Jammu and Kashmir, for allegedly maintaining contact with Pakistani operatives.

Security agencies have intensified surveillance and investigations in the region to identify potential networks and prevent further breaches of national security.

Kolkata, Dec 14: What was expected to be a historic celebration for Indian football fans spiralled into chaos on Saturday after Argentine football legend Lionel Messiโ€™s much-anticipated appearance at Salt Lake Stadium was cut short, leaving thousands of ticket-holding supporters angry and disappointed.

The event, for which fans had paid steep ticket prices, ran into trouble when Messi stayed on the field for only about 20 minutes before being swiftly escorted away under tight security. Organisers had earlier indicated that the superstar would spend considerably more time engaging with fans inside the stadium.

The abrupt exit triggered unrest among sections of the crowd, with reports of spectators throwing objects, damaging stadium infrastructure and attempting to breach security barricades. Police and security personnel intervened to control the situation and prevent further disorder.

West Bengal Director General of Police Rajeev Kumar later confirmed that the eventโ€™s main organiser, Satadru Dutta, has been detained in connection with alleged lapses in planning and crowd management. Authorities have launched a detailed probe into the incident, and officials said accountability would be fixed once the investigation is complete. Kumar also noted that measures would be explored to compensate fans who felt short-changed.

Strong reactions also came from Raj Bhavan, with Governor C. V. Ananda Bose condemning the organisersโ€™ conduct. He called for firm action, including legal proceedings against those responsible, refund of ticket money, freezing of accounts linked to the event, and recovery of expenses for damage caused to the stadium.

The All India Football Federation (AIFF), meanwhile, clarified that it had no association with the programme. In an official statement, the federation said the event was privately organised by a public relations firm and that neither permission nor prior intimation had been sought from the AIFF.

The episode has reignited concerns over crowd safety, transparency, and accountability in the organisation of high-profile sporting and celebrity events in India.

The announcement was made alongside plans for an expanded, two-day multi-stage edition of its flagship property Euphony Voyage.

Founded in 2021, Wish and Key was established with a clear vision to build sustainable and high-quality live music experiences in the Northeast. Over the years, the company has curated several annual music properties. Its flagship concert series, Euphony Voyage, has hosted prominent national artists including Rito Riba, Papon, Javed Ali, Prateek Kuhad, and Vishal & Sheykhar. Anjaw,Dec 12: Twenty-one labourers from Assam are feared dead after a dumper truck they were travelling in plunged into a deep gorge in Arunachal Pradesh's Anjaw district, authorities said. The accident occurred late on Monday along the remote Hayuliang Chaglagam road, a narrow and treacherous mountain stretch. Officials estimate the vehicle may have fallen nearly 1,000 feet.

Rescue teams from Anjaw and Tezu districts reached the site on Wednesday, recovering 14 bodies. One man, identified as Budheswor Deep, was found alive. He reportedly alerted relatives earlier that morning, prompting local authorities to begin verifying the incident. Officials said he has been moved to Assam for medical treatment.

Police in Tinsukia said the labourers had travelled to Arunachal Pradesh to work on a private construction project. All were residents of Dhelaghat in the Gillapukri Tea Estate. With only one survivor located, officers believe that 21 of the 22 men in the vehicle may have died. The identified victims include Rahul Kumar, Somir Deep, Arjun Kumar, Pankaj Manki, Ajay Manki, Bijay Kumar, Abhoy Bhumij, Rohit Manki, Birendra Kumar, Agor Tanti, Dhiren Chatriya, Rojoni Nag, Deep Gowala, Ramsebak Suna, Sonaton Nag, Sanjay Kumar, Karan Kumar and Junash Munda.

Officials say rescue efforts are being hindered by the steep terrain and the difficulty of accessing the crash site. A team from Tinsukia is travelling to the area, though authorities warn that a clearer assessment may take time. Initial findings suggest the dumper lost control on a narrow section of the road before plunging into the gorge.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed condolences, saying he was โ€œdeeply painedโ€ by the loss of life. He added that his administration is coordinating with authorities in Arunachal Pradesh and that efforts to trace the missing and provide medical support are being prioritised.

TAWANG, Dec 12: A tragic fire at the Netaji Subash Chandra Bose Awasiya Vidyalaya hostel in Taktsang claimed the life of a six-year-old girl shortly after midnight on Thursday. The blaze, which began around 12:20 AM, is suspected to have been triggered by an electrical malfunction.

The victim, Choine Tsomu, a Class I student from Shocktsan village under Jemeithang Circle, was the daughter of Tenzin Yeton and Yeshi Wange.

According to initial accounts, several students were asleep when the fire broke out. Dorjee Tsomu, a Class VIII student, along with hostel warden Nima Lhamu, quickly responded and managed to pull many children to safety. However, the flames intensified rapidly, making it impossible to rescue young Choine in time.

Troops from a nearby Indian Army post, local villagers, school staff and hostel authorities rushed in to help. Despite their efforts, the combination of dry wooden boards and hostel furniture caused the fire to spread swiftly. Fire extinguishers and water supplies were used to bring the situation under control.

The blaze resulted in the loss of the childโ€™s life and left substantial damage to the hostel building and property.

By morning, DC Tawang Namgyal Angmo, SP Dr. D.W. Thongon, ADC Lungla Tashi Dhondup, DDMO Genden Tsomu, and DDSE Tawang Hridar Phuntsok visited the scene to review the destruction and meet the grieving family.

Authorities have sent the body for post-mortem examination as part of the legal procedures.

To ensure accountability and prevent such tragedies in the future, the Deputy Commissioner has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident and instructed all departments to carry out a comprehensive safety audit of residential schools and hostels across the district.

ITANAGAR, Dec 12: The Kamsa Dramatics Societyโ€™s (KDS) much-loved production โ€œThat One Hour in the Cafรฉโ€ drew an enthusiastic audience last evening, following its return to the stage by popular demand. The special show, held at the 2Wo Restaurant in Sumpa Complex, near Hotel Todo, captivated viewers with its intimate storytelling and powerful performances.

Created by Paalin Kabak, the play unfolds in the final hour before a cafรฉ closes for the night. What begins as a routine evening stretches into an unexpected journey, as a steady stream of customers each carrying personal conflicts, dreams, and unspoken emotions walks in. Among them are Minam, struggling with unresolved household issues; Bicky and Tato, aspiring cafรฉ owners; Isaac, a quiet observer; the spirited trio Tai, Jumi and Simon; and a delivery boy preoccupied with more than just his work.

Their intertwined stories gradually reveal hidden tensions and heartfelt truths, transforming the cafรฉ into a reflection of human connections and vulnerabilities.

Founded in 2020 by Paalin Kabak, the Kamsa Dramatics Society has established itself as a prominent force in Arunachal Pradeshโ€™s contemporary theatre landscape. With impactful productions such as Naya Guitar, Fragmented Symphony, and the award-winning tragicomedy Andar, the group continues to bring socially relevant narratives to the stage.

In addition to its productions, KDS has actively contributed to theatre education and outreach through childrenโ€™s workshops, clowning sessions, and the weekly Sunday Monologues at Indira Gandhi Park. Several of its members have earned placements in esteemed institutions, including the National School of Drama (NSD), Bhartendu Natya Academy, and the Film and Television Institute (FTI) Arunachal.

Through its artistic journey, KDS remains committed to fostering empathy, creativity, and social awareness a mission strongly echoed in last nightโ€™s performance of โ€œThat One Hour in the Cafรฉ.โ€
