Three Killed, Two Injured After Landslide Triggers Fatal Accident on Migging–Tuting Road
Migging, June 10: In a tragic incident, three people lost their lives and two others sustained serious injuries after a vehicle plunged into a deep gorge following a landslide on the Migging–Tuting Road in Upper Siang district on Wednesday morning.
According to official sources, the accident occurred at around 7:30 AM, nearly three kilometres from Migging towards Tuting. A Tata Nexon carrying five occupants was travelling along the road when a landslide struck the stretch, causing the vehicle to lose control and fall approximately 200 metres down a steep slope.
The deceased have been identified as Late Shri Ottu Nitik, Late Smt. Bami Nitik, and Late Ms. Olek Tali. The injured, Smti Jesek Jongkey and Ms. Ponung Nitik, suffered serious injuries. Their evacuation for advanced medical treatment was delayed due to multiple road blockages caused by landslides in the area.
Rescue and recovery operations were launched immediately under the supervision of ADC Tuting Pandov Perme and CO Migging. Personnel from the district administration, the Indian Army, and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) jointly undertook the challenging mission.
The bodies of the deceased were recovered through a coordinated effort involving 5 DOGRA, 117 Engineer Regiment, 61 Battalion ITBP Migging, 18 Sikh, 11 Sikh, 1811 Medium Regiment, and 17 Mahar Regiment.
ADC Pandov Perme informed that the rescue operation was successfully concluded and the mortal remains were handed over to the respective families for the performance of last rites.
Meanwhile, District Disaster Management Officer (DDMO) Ms. Anie Yangfo stated that, following official verification and in accordance with State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) norms, an ex-gratia assistance of ₹4 lakh each will be provided to the next of kin of the deceased. Financial assistance for the treatment of the injured will also be extended as per applicable government provisions.
In a statement, the Indian Army said that Quick Reaction Teams from Migging and Tuting, equipped with rescue, medical, and mountaineering equipment, reached the accident site immediately after receiving information about the mishap. Despite continuous rainfall, steep slopes, dense vegetation, and hazardous terrain, Army personnel carried out an intensive rescue mission for over nine hours.
Troops led by Subedar Major and Honorary Lieutenant MD Nasir Hussain successfully recovered two bodies and transported them to the road head before handing them over to civil authorities. Another team led by Sub Arjun Singh of 5 DOGRA continued search operations in difficult and slushy conditions.
The operation underscored the Indian Army’s commitment to humanitarian assistance and its capability to conduct rescue missions in the challenging terrain of Arunachal Pradesh.
The district administration has expressed profound condolences to the bereaved families and assured all possible support to those affected by the tragedy.
