MISING COMMUNITY DEMANDS PUBLIC APOLOGY FROM TANA TAMAR TARA OVER DEROGATORY REMARKS

Lukhimpur 31 May 2026 The Takam Mising Porin Kรฉbang (TMPK) strongly condemns the recent statements made by Mr. Tana Tamar Tara, who used the derogatory and outdated term "Miri" to refer to the Mising community in his recent social media posts and media briefings.

The Mising community finds the use of this term highly offensive, disrespectful, and completely unacceptable. The term undermines the identity and dignity of the community, which has long asserted its rightful nomenclature.

The TMPK reminds all public figures that "Mising" is the correct, official name of the community, as formally recognized and protected under the Constitution of India. The use of obsolete and derogatory exonyms is a direct affront to the constitutional rights and cultural dignity of indigenous populations.

"We demand an immediate, unconditional public apology from Mr. Tana Tamar Tara for his insensitive remarks" said Reedeep Jack Doley

Tilak Doley, President of the Takam Mising Porin Kebang (TMPK), has stated that while the Mising community supports the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Arunachal Pradesh for the protection of indigenous tribal identity, it cannot accept the application of the ILP regime to the Mising community.

In a statement shared on social media, Doley said TMPK has always strongly supported the safeguarding of indigenous communities. However, he maintained that the Mising community and other ethnic groups should not be placed in the same category for the purpose of making ILP mandatory for the Mising people. According to him, this position is based on historical context and longstanding socio-cultural ties with Arunachal Pradesh.

Doley also said it is not appropriate for individuals, particularly some young members of society, to suggest that the ILP should be applied to the Mising community without a proper understanding of the historical background.

Highlighting the historical and cultural connections between the Mising people and several tribes of Arunachal Pradesh, he noted that the Mising, Nyishi, Adi, Galo, Apatani and Tagin communities broadly belong to the Tibeto-Burman ethnolinguistic family. He further stated that, prior to their migration to the plains, the Mising people had close historical links with Arunachal Pradesh and maintained long-standing settlement and cultural connections with the region.

Doley pointed out that members of the Mising community continue to reside in districts such as East Siang, Lower Siang, Namsai and Papum Pare. He argued that, considering this historical background, demands to bring the Mising community under the ILP regime are unnecessary and unfortunate.

He further stated that the Mising people maintained deep-rooted connections with Arunachal Pradesh even before the British administration introduced the ILP system.

Referring to the issue of Permanent Resident Certificates (PRC), Doley said opposition to granting PRCs to Mising people residing in Arunachal Pradesh is a matter of concern. He added that attempts to impose ILP on the Mising community are similarly regrettable.

โ€œThe Mising people are not seeking to assert dominance or demand special privileges in Arunachal Pradesh. However, based on historical context and long-standing ties, we cannot accept the application of ILP to the Mising community,โ€ Doley said.

Over the course of nearly two decades, his philanthropic work has expanded from healthcare awareness to multi-faceted community rehabilitation.

The Turning Point: In 2008, as a teenager, Jeke witnessed a tragic incident where a mother lost her child outside Naharlagun General Hospital simply due to a lack of available blood.

The Foundation: This heartbreak motivated him to establish a voluntary youth network originally known as Arunachal Vivekananda Yuva Shakti, which was later renamed the Arunachal Life Saving Foundation in 2019.

Jeke has personally donated blood 86 times. His massive state-wide donor network has transformed the regional landscape, successfully eliminating acute blood scarcity across Arunachal Pradesh.

Multi-Faceted Social Work
Beyond his pioneering blood donation camps, Jeke tackles several neglected social crises:

Dignity for the Deceased: He handles the cremation and last rites of abandoned, unnatural, or decomposed bodies. He and his team have respectfully managed over 110 to 208 unclaimed bodies at sites like the Chimpu cremation ground.

He rescues, shelters, and provides medical care to elderly individuals who have been abandoned by their families.

He has adopted several orphaned children and ensures they receive free education at a local school.

He actively collects unused medicines from households to redistribute them for free to impoverished patients in dire need.

Major Milestones and Recognitions
National Youth Award: Honoured by the National Youth Project for his exceptional leadership in mobilizing youth for voluntary blood donations.
State Recognition: He has been awarded the State Gold Medal by the Government of Arunachal Pradesh and a Gold Donor Card.
Pledge of Mortal Remains: In late 2025, Jeke made a highly publicized pledge to donate his body after death to the Tomo Riba Institute of Health & Medical Sciences (TRIHMS) Naharlagun. He took this step to address the acute shortage of medical cadavers for training student doctors, declaring that "service should not stop with our last breath".

Car Catches Fire in the Heart of Naharlagun City Due to Faulty Wiring by Mechanic

A private car was completely gutted in a fire incident in the middle of Naharlagun city today. The blaze broke out due to incorrect electrical wiring allegedly done by a mechanic.

According to preliminary information, the vehicle was parked/stationed near the busy central area of Naharlagun when smoke was noticed coming from the engine compartment, which soon turned into flames. Local residents and passers-by immediately alerted the fire services. Fire tenders reached the spot promptly and brought the fire under control.

However, the car was extensively damaged.
Eyewitnesses reported that the owner had recently taken the vehicle to a local mechanic for electrical repairs. It is suspected that improper wiring work led to a short circuit, which triggered the fire while the vehicle was on the road.

No casualties were reported in the incident. Traffic movement in the area was temporarily affected as the burnt vehicle was later towed away.

The police and fire department have initiated an investigation into the matter. Authorities are examining whether negligence on the part of the mechanic contributed to the fire. The vehicle owner is expected to file a formal complaint.

This incident serves as a strong reminder to vehicle owners to get repairs done only from certified and experienced mechanics and to regularly inspect the electrical systems of their vehicles.

Assam Assembly Passes Historic Bill to Prohibit Polygamy; Outlines Jail Terms up to 10 Years

GUWAHATI, ASSAM 31 May 2026 : In a historic move toward social reform and gender justice, the Assam Legislative Assembly has officially passed The Assam Prohibition of Polygamy Bill, 2025. The legislation creates one of the strictest legal frameworks against bigamy and polygamy in the country, aiming to eliminate marital exploitation and protect the dignity and legal rights of women.

Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma described the passage of the bill as a "strong stride towards justice for our Nari Shakti (women empowerment)" and a key phase in a wider reform agenda.

The new law makes entering into a second or subsequent marriage a criminal offence while a previous spouse is alive and the marriage has not been legally dissolved. The punishments are divided into specific categories:

Standard Offence: Anyone who contracts a subsequent marriage without legally dissolving their first marriage faces up to 7 years of imprisonment and a fine.

Concealment Offence (10-Year Jail Term): If an individual intentionally conceals or hides their existing marriage from the person they are newly marrying, the punishment escalates to up to 10 years of imprisonment along with a fine.

Repeat Offenders: Individuals who commit the offence a second time or repeatedly will face double the standard punishment.

Accountability for Facilitators: Religious clerics (such as Qazis or priests), village elders, or legal guardians who dishonestly or fraudulently facilitate or solemnize an illegal polygamous marriage can be punished with up to 2 years in prison and a fine of up to โ‚น1 Lakh.

Safeguards and Compensation for Victims
To ensure comprehensive justice, the legislation includes provisions for financial compensation and legal protection for women affected by illegal or fraudulent subsequent marriages. The state administration will appoint a dedicated authority to assess and award these compensations on a case-by-case basis.

Furthermore, those convicted under this act will become ineligible for state government jobs, public welfare schemes, or contesting local elections.

Scope and Constitutional Exemptions:
The law has a wide jurisdiction, covering any resident of Assam who enters into a polygamous marriage outside the state, or individuals living outside Assam who own immovable property or receive government benefits within the state.

However, keeping in line with constitutional safeguards and respecting customary practices:
The provisions will not apply to areas under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution of India (including autonomous tribal regions).

The law exempts recognized Scheduled Tribes (ST) within the meaning of Clause (25) of Article 366, read with Article 342 of the Constitution.

The bill has been positioned by the state government as a critical stepping stone toward a comprehensive Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state. The legislation has now been forwarded to the Governor of Assam and will subsequently be sent for presidential assent before being officially notified into force.

"We strongly condemn the highly disrespectful and derogatory remarks made against Shri Tana Tamar Tara, a social activist, spokesperson of the Arunachal ST Bachao Andolan Committee, and public figure dedicated to protecting tribal rights and indigenous interests in Arunachal Pradesh.

Such personal attacks, originating from a video circulated widely on social media, are not only in poor taste but also constitute an attempt to malign and undermine a voice that has been consistently raising issues concerning tribal identity, Inner Line Permit (ILP) implementation, and the protection of indigenous communities.

Man sentenced to life imprisonment in murder case
May 31, 2026

ITANAGAR, 30 May: The Yupia sessions court has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for the 2005 murder of a resident of Itanagar, bringing to a close a case that remained under trial for over two decades.

District and Sessions Judge Dr Hirendra Kashyap on Friday sentenced Ponu Gyadu to undergo imprisonment for life and imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 after convicting him under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for the murder of Chaba Nalo.

The court directed that in default of payment of the fine, the convict would have to undergo an additional two months of simple imprisonment. The period already spent in custody during investigation and trial โ€“ five months and 12 days โ€“ will be set off against the sentence under Section 428 of the CrPC.

According to the prosecution led by public prosecutor N Bakhang, the incident occurred on 18 September, 2005, at Niti Vihar in Itanagar. An FIR lodged by the deceasedโ€™s wife alleged that Chaba Nalo was fatally assaulted with a hammer by Ponu Gyadu while he was at a rented house. Nalo later succumbed to his injuries while being taken to hospital.

The investigation led to the arrest of Ponu Gyadu and recovery of the alleged weapon of offence โ€“ an iron hammer โ€“ on the basis of his disclosure statement. Police subsequently filed a chargesheet against Ponu Gyadu and two others under Sections 302/34 of the IPC.

The trial court examined 17 prosecution witnesses and several defence witnesses before delivering its judgement on 22 April this year. In its judgement, the court held that the prosecution had established the guilt of Ponu Gyadu beyond reasonable doubt. The court observed that the murder was committed as an act of revenge following an earlier physical assault on the convictโ€™s step-brother. It noted that the convict struck the deceased on the head with a hammer, resulting in his death.

While deciding the sentence, the court considered submissions made by the defence that the convict was the sole breadwinner of his family, had an aged mother, a wife and four children, including a son suffering from tuberculosis.

However, the court ruled that the case did not merit the benefit of probation and did not fall within the category of the โ€˜rarest of rareโ€™ cases warranting capital punishment.

The court acquitted the other two co-accused of the charges.

The judge informed the convict of his right to challenge the conviction before the Gauhati High Court. (The Arunachal Times)
