ITANAGAR, Oct 25: In depth discussions on revenge killings, polygamy and drug abuse took centre stage as the East Kameng Social Welfare and Cultural Organisation (EKSWCO) celebrated its 47th Foundation Day-cum-Federal Assembly of Clan Based Organisations on Friday at Lumdung in Debayar Circle of East Kameng district.

The day-long event, held under the theme “Together for Social Change and Cultural Pride,” brought together elders, youth leaders, community representatives, government officials and students for an open and often intense dialogue on the district’s most pressing challenges.
One of the key highlights of the celebration was the formal induction of 78 clan-based community organisations into the EKSWCO’s federal unit—signalling a major step toward creating a unified community platform to address shared concerns.
The new structure is expected to strengthen collaboration between various CBOs, enabling more coordinated efforts in tackling both social and developmental issues.

Home Minister Mama Natung, who graced the occasion, urged the people to adopt a positive mindset and collective approach to usher in meaningful change.
“Rather than being negative, we need to have a positive approach for the development of our society.

A collective positive approach will take East Kameng forward. Destructive mentality is harmful for society,” Natung said, calling on the people to rise above factionalism and work for a shared vision of progress.
EKSWCO chairperson Raya Flago Taniang reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to confronting these challenges head-on.
“We are focused on the growth of East Kameng. From addressing drug issues to improving the education sector, we are committed to progress.

Today, along with the CBOs, the Nyishi Elite Society (NES) and the All Nyishi Youth Association, East Kameng Unit, we discussed, debated and deliberated on various topics.

A memorandum on these discussions will soon be released,” he said.
Apart from social issues like polygamy, revenge killings and drug abuse, matters related to the alleged Lada–Sarli Frontier Highway compensation ‘scam’ also featured prominently in the discussions of the technical session.
Several speakers highlighted growing concerns over land compensation irregularities and called for transparent handling of public resources. Many community members emphasized the need for vigilance and collective action to safeguard public interests in major infrastructure projects.

The event also celebrated excellence by felicitating students and sportspersons who have brought laurels to the district. Organisers said such recognitions are intended to inspire the next generation to aim higher and contribute positively to society.

Founded in 1978, EKSWCO has long been at the forefront of community mobilisation, welfare initiatives and cultural preservation in East Kameng. Over the decades, the organisation has emerged as a powerful socio-cultural platform, enabling the people of the district to come together to address critical issues, protect indigenous values and push for sustained development.

Hockey Arunachal President Dr. Gumjum Haider Dedicates ‘Best Administrator’ Award to People of Arunachal Pradesh

GUWAHATI, October 17: The Annual North East Hockey Award Ceremony, held today at the Manipur Bhawan in Guwahati, celebrated the region's top administrators, with Dr. Gumjum Haider, President of Hockey Arunachal, dedicating his prestigious award to the people of his state. Dr. Haider was honoured as the Best Sports Administrator in Hockey for his "discipline leadership and clean administration."
Dr. Haider is also recognized as the Founder-Cum-President of Hockey Arunachal, an organization established in 2010 with the motto "To promote Hockey in Arunachal Pradesh." His leadership has been a key factor in the development of the sport in the state, often working to spread awareness and overcome the lack of proper facilities and equipment in the past, a mission which included efforts to ensure the utilization of the first world-class Hockey turf inaugurated at the Sangay Lhaden Sports Academy at Chimpu. He was recently re-elected unopposed as President of Hockey Arunachal in August 2023 for another four-year term. Beyond his role in sports, Dr. Haider has also served in the public sector as a State Information Commissioner and is known for his earlier role as a former General Secretary of the All Arunachal Pradesh Students' Union (AAPSU) and the North East Students' Organization (NESO), demonstrating a long-standing commitment to public life in the state.

In an emotional and inspiring address, Dr. Haider dedicated the accolade, stating, “This award is not mine alone; it belongs to the resilient and dedicated people of Arunachal Pradesh. Their unwavering spirit is the true power behind our success. We will continue to climb, believing in that beautiful thought that the journey of a thousand goals begins with a single, disciplined step.” His comments resonated with the gathering, emphasizing the emotional connection between sport and community spirit.
The ceremony also paid tribute to other major contributors to North East sports development. Shri Gyanendra Ningombam, the former President of Hockey India, was conferred the title of Sports Architect of North East in recognition of his extensive association with Hockey and his significant role in sports development, particularly in Manipur and the North East in general. Meanwhile, Shri Tapan Das, the President of Hockey Assam, was recognized as the Best Hockey Promoter of Northeast India for his relentless work in popularizing the game across the region.
The high-profile event drew prominent hockey administrators and players from six North Eastern states, including Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland, and Tripura. Held in the august presence of various media houses and dedicated Hockey Sponsors, the ceremony underscored the growing momentum and collaborative spirit driving the future of hockey across the North Eastern states.
