Senior Transport Department Officer Arrested in Multi-Crore Luxury Vehicle Smuggling Racket

The District Transport Officer (DTO), Yajum Lombi, posted in Yupia (Papum Pare district), has been arrested from her Itanagar residence by the Capital Police on Friday. She is accused of facilitating fake registrations for luxury vehicles illegally smuggled into the state.

Earlier, a data entry operator from Palin in Kra Dadi district was also apprehended in connection with the same racket and remains in judicial custody.

The July-busted syndicate involved over 73 stolen luxury vehicles, valued at more than ₹30.5 crore, sourced from Delhi‑NCR and other parts of North India.

Among the seized vehicles: 27 Hyundai Cretas, 9 Toyota Fortuners, 5 Kia Seltos, along with high-end SUVs from Audi, Ford, Mahindra, Maruti, and others—all blacklisted and tied to FIRs in Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and multiple regions.

Investigations exposed that brokers tampered with engine and chassis numbers and used forged documents to secure fake registrations before the vehicles were sold at discounted rates across Arunachal Pradesh.

Authorities say this is the largest-ever single-station recovery of stolen vehicles in India.

The police have now extended their probe to explore potential international money trails and digital transaction networks linked to the cartel.
