Apatani Tribe Celebrates Agricultural Dree Festival in Itanagar
Itanagar:
With the onset of July, Arunachal Pradesh welcomes Dree, the main agricultural festival of the Apatani tribe, marking a time of prayer for a bountiful harvest, protection of crops, and the well-being of the community.
Celebrated collectively since 1967, Dree reflects the deep agrarian and spiritual connection the Apatani people share with nature while reinforcing community bonding and cultural unity.
Over the years, Dree has evolved to reflect the changing needs of the community. Stalls showcasing Apatani handicrafts, cuisines, and textiles have become a highlight, adding vibrancy to the celebrations while promoting local artisanship.
Notably, the Apatani community has also incorporated exhibition stalls for blood donation camps and HIV prevention awareness during the festival. These stalls, often organised in collaboration with local health departments and youth volunteers, encourage festival attendees to donate blood, participate in free health check-ups, and engage in interactive sessions on HIV prevention. Pamphlets, counselling sessions, and on-ground testing facilities are provided to raise awareness and promote safe practices within the community.
These initiatives reflect the progressive mindset of the Apatani community, using the Dree festival not only as a cultural celebration but also as a platform for public health awareness and social responsibility. Such efforts are setting an example for other tribes and communities in the region, demonstrating how traditional festivals can integrate community welfare and cultural preservation.
As the celebrations continue, the spirit of Dree serves as a reminder of the importance of nurturing both community and the environment while embracing social initiatives for a healthier society.
