Arunachal officials selected for World Para Athletics C’ships

Itanagar, Sep 29: Three National Technical Officials (NTOs) from Arunachal Pradesh have been selected to officiate at the ongoing World Para Athletics Championships being held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi from September 25 to October 5.

The officials — Techi Sonu, Tana Yahe and Techi Nunu — are among the 1,000 officials overseeing the championship, which has brought together over 1,700 athletes from more than 100 countries to compete across 186 medal events.

This is the first time India is hosting the prestigious global tournament, considered a landmark moment in the country’s para sports history.

The Paralympic Association of Arunachal (PAA) said the selection of the three officials underscored the state’s growing contribution to para sports and its commitment to promoting inclusivity.

“The representation at the World Championships is a testimony to Arunachal Pradesh’s sporting excellence and dedication,” a statement from the PAA said.

The association added that it would continue to nurture para athletes and technical officials to strengthen the state’s contribution at the national and international levels.

Guv advocates grassroots sports push in state

Itanagar, Sep 29: Governor K T Parnaik on Monday urged the district Olympic coordination committee (DOCC) to actively identify and nurture talented sportspersons from rural areas, ensuring opportunities for every able-bodied youth with an interest in games and sports.

The governor stressed the need for sports medicine experts and proper facilities to support young athletes, saying the state’s youth possess immense untapped potential.

He reminded the committee during a meeting at Raj Bhavan here, that with India bidding to host the Commonwealth Games in 2030 and the Olympics in 2036, it was both a matter of national pride and a call to action, an official statement informed.

Parnaik exhorted the Committee to motivate aspiring sportspersons to dedicate themselves with discipline, determination, and hard work so they may one day represent India on the world stage.

He also underlined that sports and fitness are not the preserve of athletes alone but essential for every citizen, noting that a strong nation is built on a society that embraces fitness and active living.

Earlier, the DOCC, led by its chairman Dikto Yekar, briefed the governor about challenges in strengthening sports activities in the state and the need for better coordination with the state Olympic committee to enable selection of the best talent from districts.

Guv, Union Min discuss sustainable urban growth

Itanagar, Sep 28: Governor K T Parnaik on Sunday discussed the challenges and opportunities of rapid urbanisation in the state with Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs Tokhan Sahu during a meeting at the Raj Bhavan here.

The governor expressed concern over the unchecked expansion of towns and cities, highlighting problems such as mushrooming concrete structures, narrow lanes replacing proper roads, inadequate drainage, poor solid waste management, and unregulated septic waste disposal.

He cautioned that without timely intervention; these issues could compromise the state’s developmental vision.

Parnaik urged the Centre to extend support and guidance to the state government in framing people-centric and sustainable strategies to manage urban growth.

“Adequate assistance from the Union Government is vital to ensure Arunachal Pradesh develops in a progressive yet balanced manner,” he stressed.

Calling housing a pressing need, the Governor underlined the importance of affordable and inclusive solutions to meet the demands of a rising population. He also underscored that cleanliness should be central to any urban planning exercise.

“Well-maintained surroundings not only improve public health but also uplift the spirit of the people, enhancing the livability of our towns and cities,” he observed.

The Union Minister of State appreciated the concerns raised and held a meaningful exchange on practical measures to achieve sustainable and people-focused urban development in Arunachal Pradesh.

Students’ body opposes ST demand by Chakmas & Hajongs

Itanagar, Sep 28: The All Changlang District Students’ Union (ACDSU) has strongly opposed the recent demand by the Chakma and Hajong communities for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status in Arunachal Pradesh, terming it “unethical, unjustified, and unacceptable.”

In a statement issued on Saturday, ACDSU warned that granting such recognition would “endanger the rights, identity, and constitutional safeguards” of the state’s indigenous tribal population.

The union said the constitutional protections extended to Arunachal Pradesh were meant exclusively for indigenous groups and should not be diluted to include non-indigenous communities.

The ACDSU’s reaction came after the Joint Action Committee (JAC), a conglomerate of Chakma and Hajong organisations, staged a referendum rally at Diyun on September 26 demanding a permanent solution to the long-standing issues faced by the two communities.

Former Independent MLA of Bordumsa-Diyun, Somlung Mossang, also rejected the demand, stating that no individual or group can unilaterally decide the outcome of such a contentious issue. “The matter requires wider consultation and consensus involving the government, community-based organisations (CBOs), NGOs, and student bodies,” he said.

Mossang even cited an example, pointing out that his brother, Kamlung Mossang, the elected legislator from Miao, could not alone decide on granting citizenship or ST status to the Chakma and Hajong communities in his constituency. “No, he alone cannot,” Somlung remarked, stressing that such decisions must be collective.

Issuing a stern warning, ACDSU cautioned political parties, organisations, and individuals against supporting what it described as “misplaced demands” motivated by political or personal interests. The students’ body also pledged to resist any move, policy, or action that undermines the rights of indigenous tribes.

Reaffirming its stand, ACDSU urged the state government and authorities concerned to safeguard the cultural, social, and political rights of the indigenous population and ensure strict adherence to constitutional provisions.

Colossal fungus unearthed in Arunachal, a first for India

Itanagar, Sep 28: The dense forests of Arunachal Pradesh’s have yielded yet another marvel — a giant wood-decaying fungus that has now been christened Bridgeoporus kanadii. Scientists say it is the first record of the genus Bridgeoporus from India and only the second known species worldwide.

The discovery was made by researchers of the Botanical Survey of India (BSI) during a survey of wild edible mushrooms in West Kameng district earlier this month. Lead author Arvind Parihar and his team stumbled upon around 40 fruiting bodies of the massive fungus thriving on old fir trees.

What sets Bridgeoporus apart is its extraordinary size. While the smallest specimens measured just under 10 cm in radius, the largest spread over three metres.

“It is so large that I could sit on it, and it remained firmly attached to the tree,” said Parihar, who has studied macrofungi for over 15 years.

Although local communities were aware of its existence, they ignored the fungus as it is inedible and holds no commercial value. However, its ecological role is profound.

As a wood-rotting fungus, B. kanadii helps recycle nutrients by breaking down cellulose and lignin, thus playing a vital role in forest regeneration. Without such fungi, scientists warn, forests would be clogged with fallen logs and leaf litter.

Back in the lab, the team carried out meticulous macro- and micro-morphological studies, recording dozens of features such as size, colour and thickness.

DNA sequencing was performed using advanced bioinformatics software and cross-checked against global databases, confirming it as a new species. Reference specimens are now preserved at the Central National Herbarium in Howrah, while dried samples will also be showcased at the Indian Museum in Kolkata to raise public interest in fungi.

Parihar admitted the challenges of studying fungi: “They emerge in monsoon, when forests are most inaccessible. Once collected, we spend hours recording 50–60 features before the samples can be dried and stored.”

Despite the hurdles, the team believes the discovery is a reminder of how little is known about India’s fungal wealth.

“Most people only ask whether a mushroom is poisonous or edible. But fungi are silent custodians of the forest,” Parihar said.
