Bhutan 🇧🇹 24/7 Flood Monitoring Control Room Planned for Amochhu River Basin 🇮🇳

Plans are underway to establish a round-the-clock flood monitoring control room for the Amochhu river basin in Phuentshogling. The initiative was discussed during the 39th Joint Expert Team (JET) meeting between the Royal Government of Bhutan and the Government of India, held in Paro on October 8–9.

The JET oversees the implementation of the “Comprehensive Scheme for Establishment of Hydro-meteorological and Flood Forecasting Network on Rivers Common to India and Bhutan,” a collaborative effort that began in 1955. Under this framework, Bhutan shares hydro-meteorological data with India, aiding flood forecasting in Assam and West Bengal.

During the meeting, both sides reviewed the progress of the GoI Flood Warning program under the NCHM for FY 2025–2026 and approved new activities for FY 2026–2027. They also discussed long-term plans and proposed initiatives for 2026–2031.

The JET meets twice a year, alternating between Bhutan and India—before and after the monsoon season. The previous meeting was held in Kolkata, India, in December 2024, while the next session is tentatively scheduled for April 2026 in India.

RGoB Awards Nu. 300 Million to Strengthen CSOs’ Role in Social Development

To boost the social impact on communities and extend the reach of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) across Bhutan, the Royal Government of Bhutan (RGoB) has provided Nu. 300 million in support through the GoI-PTA as part of the 13th Five-Year Plan.

The grants aim to assist CSOs in their vital contributions toward Bhutan’s social development, focusing on improving health and wellbeing, ensuring access to quality education, and promoting a comprehensive and inclusive social protection system.

To highlight the collaboration between the Government and CSOs, the CSO Authority organized an event yesterday evening to sign the grant agreements awarded to 16 CSOs. The contracts were signed between the CSO Authority and the recipient organizations in the presence of representatives from the Office of the Cabinet Affairs and Strategic Coordination (OCASC).

Among the recipients, Tarayana Foundation received a grant of Nu. 53.6 million for its project titled “Holistic Community Development with Focus on Enhancing Housing Conditions, Improving Nutrition and Economic Security to Strengthen Social Protection in Rural Bhutan.”

The project will be implemented in Sergithang and Lumang Gewogs under Tsirang and Trashigang Districts, respectively. It aims to construct adequate housing for nearly 100 families living in poverty, while also generating economic opportunities, enhancing skills development, and ensuring food and nutrition security for rural communities.
