The first human spacewalk was performed by Alexei Leonov.

In 1965, he flew aboard the spacecraft Voskhod 2.
During the mission, Leonov exited the spacecraft and floated freely in space.
He remained outside the spacecraft for about 12 minutes.
It was the first time a human experienced open space outside a spacecraft.
That moment became the beginning of spacewalks, which are now essential for building and repairing spacecraft.

In 1963, Valentina Tereshkova launched aboard Vostok 6.
During the mission, she traveled around Earth 48 times.
That was more time in space than all American astronauts combined at that moment.

Her historic mission proved that women could perform space missions just as successfully as men

In 1961, NASA launched a chimpanzee named Ham the Chimp into space.
He flew aboard the Mercury‑Redstone 2 rocket.
Ham’s mission tested whether living beings could perform tasks in zero gravity.
During the flight, Ham successfully pulled levers and followed commands.
After the mission, his capsule safely splashed down in the Atlantic Ocean.
Just 3 months later, NASA sent the first American astronaut, Alan Shepard, into space. 🚀

The world celebrated the first dog in space… but the truth was heartbreaking. 💔🐕

In 1957, Laika launched aboard Sputnik 2.
She became the first living creature to orbit Earth.
But the spacecraft had no system to bring her back to Earth.
Scientists later revealed that Laika died a few hours after launch due to overheating.
Even so, her mission provided valuable data about survival in space.
Laika’s sacrifice helped pave the way for human spaceflight just four years later.

After launch in 1957, Sputnik 1 successfully entered orbit around Earth.
It traveled at an incredible speed of about 29,000 km per hour.
The tiny satellite completed more than 1,400 orbits around Earth.
For weeks, it kept sending radio “beep-beep” signals to scientists on Earth.
People around the world tracked its signals using simple radio equipment.
After about 3 months in space, Sputnik finally burned up in Earth’s atmosphere…
but it had already changed history forever.

Have you ever noticed… we only see ONE side of the Moon? 🌙😳
That’s because the Moon is tidally locked to Earth.
It takes the Moon the same time to rotate once on its axis as it does to orbit Earth — about 27.3 days!
So the same side always faces us, while the “far side” stays hidden from Earth.
The far side was first photographed in 1959 by Luna 3.
And no… it’s not permanently dark — it gets sunlight too! ☀️
