Smart Meter Drive Triggers Strong Protest by Women in Beerwah

Beerwah, Nov 21, KNT. Women in Beerwah launched a strong protest on Friday against the installation of smart electricity meters. A large crowd gathered in the main market and accused officials of ignoring repeated pleas about rising power bills.
Protesters said monthly charges had already climbed and families were struggling to manage basic expenses. They said new smart meters would increase the burden on low-income homes and deepen existing hardship.
Women told KNT that every bill felt heavier than the last. They said the administration should fix civic issues first and stop steps that increase public stress.
Protesters urged the district authorities to pause the installation drive and find a workable solution that protects household budgets.

Ruhullah Says Ego Must Fall, Slams ‘BJP-Style’ Attacks

Pulwama, Nov 21, KNT. MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi said he has met no non-NC MLA or leader and called the current chatter media fiction. He spoke in Haripari Tral while consoling the family of the Crime Branch photographer killed in the Nowgam police station blast. He urged leaders to drop ego, avoid personal attacks, and raise the level of political speech.
He said some lower-rung leaders use language linked with the BJP. He said they do it to please seniors. He reminded them that people trusted them in 2024. He asked if they showed the same courage while speaking against the BJP or defending public rights.
Ruhullah rejected the claim that Article 370 fueled militancy. He said militancy continues even after the change. He said minorities across India face growing pressure. He said people in Jammu and Kashmir once felt empowered under Article 370. He said they now feel disempowered and need democratic strength.
He raised concern over attacks on Kashmiris outside the Valley and asked the government to ensure safety.
On the Nowgam blast, he said the probe must expose every lapse. He said trained personnel should have handled the explosives, not a tailor or a naib tehsildar. He demanded accountability, compensation, and jobs for the victims’ families.

Casualties are feared after a massive late-night blast rocked Nowgam Police Station at around 11:20 pm on Friday, sources said.
They said that the explosion occurred when a Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team, along with police personnel and the local Tehsildar, was inspecting a large quantity of ammonium nitrate that had been confiscated earlier in a high-profile inter-state terror network case, in which 2,900 kg of IED-making material was recovered.
The investigation, described by police as a “white-collar terror ecosystem” involving professionals and students radicalised through encrypted channels with alleged foreign links, has so far led to the arrest of seven key operatives, including two doctors — Dr. Muzammil Ahmad Ganaie and Dr. Adeel — who were allegedly involved in fundraising, logistics and procurement of arms and bomb-making material.
They said the blast took place during the sampling and inspection process, causing extensive damage inside the station and injuring several members. While the exact number of casualties is yet to be confirmed by officials, multiple injuries are feared.

PDP’s Aga Syed Muntazir Wins Budgam By-Poll, NC Loses Long-Held Stronghold

Budgam, Nov 14, KNT: The Budgam by-election delivered a dramatic political shift as PDP candidate Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi defeated National Conference nominee Aga Syed Mahmood Al Mosavi by a clear margin. Muntazir secured 21,576 votes. Mahmood polled 17,098. Independent candidate Jibran Dar finished third with 7,152 votes. BJP’s Aga Syed Mohsin Mosvi managed 2,619.

The remaining candidates finished far behind. NOTA recorded 544 votes, more than several contestants at the bottom of the tally.

Political observers said voter sentiment in Budgam had moved in a new direction. The influence of Aga Syed Ruhullah among Shia voters strengthened the PDP base. A large section of Jamaat e Islami sympathisers, who backed Omar Abdullah in 2024, supported PDP this time after Omar left the constituency. Supporters of Imran Ansari also rallied behind the PDP candidate, adding to the shift.

Local discontent and perceptions of neglect added to the NC setback. The result gives PDP a renewed presence in central Kashmir and turns Budgam into a competitive battleground.

Srinagar–Leh Highway Shut After Heavy Snowfall at Zojila, Sonamarg

Ganderbal, Nov 5: Fresh snowfall at Zojila, Sonamarg, Minimarg and Drass late Tuesday forced authorities to close the Srinagar–Leh highway, leaving several vehicles stranded on both sides, officials said.

Around nine inches of snow was recorded at Zojila and nearly five inches at Sonamarg, turning the surface dangerously slippery amid a sharp dip in temperatures.

Traffic Police halted movement as a precaution, while the MeT department said the snowfall falls in line with its earlier forecast for higher reaches.

Travellers have been advised not to attempt the route until clearance is completed and the road is declared safe.

Bakarwal Herder Loses 40 Livestock to Lightning in Poonch Hills

Poonch, Nov 5 (KNT): A devastating lightning strike in the upper reaches of Poonch killed around 40 sheep and goats belonging to a Bakarwal herder, wiping out nearly his entire livelihood.

The flock, owned by Khalid Hussain of Hadi Bari Baik, was resting in an open pasture during a sudden late-night thunderstorm when the bolt hit, locals said.

Officials from Sheep Husbandry and Revenue Departments have visited the spot and are preparing a loss assessment for compensation.

Locals have appealed for urgent financial relief, saying such extreme weather incidents are becoming more frequent in the Pir Panjal belt amid recent snowfall and intermittent thunderstorms.

Srinagar, Oct 31 (KNT): Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary has condemned a misleading social media reel portraying him and Minister Sakina Itoo in a false light.
