Aga Ruhullah Mehdi : A New Voice in Kashmir Politics or the Beginning of a New Political Chapter question ❓
Political debate in Jammu and Kashmir has intensified in recent months, particularly around the performance of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) government and the promises made during the election campaign. The recent hike in power tariffs has added another dimension to the debate, with many people expressing concern that rising electricity costs could further increase the financial burden on ordinary households already struggling with inflation and unemployment.
At the centre of another major political discussion is Srinagar Lok Sabha MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, whose increasingly open criticism of his own party leadership has attracted considerable public attention. Ruhullah, who won the parliamentary election on the JKNC ticket, has questioned the government's approach on several issues and has repeatedly raised concerns relating to Kashmir's economy, unemployment, inflation and the political promises made to the people.
For many Kashmiris, his willingness to speak independently has strengthened his image as a politician prepared to question his own establishment. During conversations with people, one can hear appreciation for his parliamentary interventions, particularly when he raises issues that directly affect ordinary citizens. His speeches on unemployment, economic difficulties and the rising cost of living have resonated with sections of the public who feel that these issues deserve greater political attention.
What makes Ruhullah's position particularly significant is that his criticism is not coming from an opposition bench. He is a member of the ruling party's political family, yet he has chosen to publicly highlight its shortcomings. In a political environment where leaders often avoid confronting their own parties, this has created an impression among many people that Aga Ruhullah is attempting to make the government accountable from within.
However, his political journey also deserves scrutiny.
Before entering Parliament, Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi represented the Budgam constituency as an MLA. While he had a political presence in the constituency, questions remain among sections of the public about the scale of development achieved during his tenure. Budgam continues to face serious challenges, including the long standing issue of adequate and clean drinking water supply.
There have also been discussions about development funds that remained unutilised during his tenure. Some supporters may view the lapse of funds as a reflection of caution or honesty, but politics ultimately demands results. Public representatives are elected to convert available resources into tangible benefits for the people. Funds meant for development should ideally translate into roads, water supply, health facilities, education infrastructure and other essential services rather than remaining unused.
Yet the political circumstances surrounding Aga Ruhullah today are very different from those of his MLA days.
He has emerged as one of the more prominent young voices questioning the political establishment. At a time when unemployment remains a major concern, inflation continues to affect household budgets and people expect greater accountability from elected representatives, his confrontational approach towards his own party has attracted attention.
The bigger question is : How far will Aga Ruhullah Mehdi go ❓
Is he simply demanding that the JKNC government fulfil the commitments made to the people ❓ Is he preparing for a larger political role within the existing party structure ❓ Could he eventually consider resignation, joining another political platform or even creating a new political formation ❓
At present, there is no clear indication that Aga Ruhullah is preparing to resign from the JKNC. His recent political statements can also be interpreted as an attempt to strengthen accountability rather than an immediate move away from the party. But politics can change quickly, particularly when differences between a popular leader and his party leadership become increasingly public.
If the JKNC were to take disciplinary action against him or remove him from the party, however, the situation could take a completely different turn. Such a development could provide Aga Ruhullah with an opportunity to reshape his political identity and potentially build a broader political platform around issues of accountability, unemployment, economic development and public welfare.
His political legacy also carries an important family connection.
His father, Shaheed Aga Syed Mehdi, was widely remembered for his public service, political courage and commitment to his constituents. He had contested elections under the Congress banner and developed a reputation for being closely connected with the people. Today, many people see elements of that political character in Aga Ruhullah Mehdi and believe that he has inherited his father's willingness to speak openly and stand by his political convictions.
But political inheritance alone cannot determine the future.
The people of Jammu and Kashmir will ultimately judge Aga Ruhullah by what he does next. Speaking about unemployment, inflation, political rights and government accountability is important, but the greater challenge is to convert political speeches into measurable outcomes.
If he remains within the JKNC, the question will be whether he can influence the government from inside and push it towards fulfilling its electoral commitments. If he chooses to leave, the question will be whether he can build a credible political alternative capable of attracting leaders and workers beyond traditional political divisions.
And if a new political platform eventually emerges, Kashmir will ask another important question : Will it be different from the political parties that came before it ❓
For now, all eyes are on Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi.
His next political decision could determine not only his own future but also whether a new form of political leadership is beginning to emerge in Jammu and Kashmir one that seeks to combine electoral politics with public accountability and the courage to question even one's own political establishment.
The coming months may provide the answer : Will Aga Ruhullah Mehdi remain a powerful voice within the JKNC, take a new political path, or become the face of a completely new chapter in Kashmir's politics ❓
