Sadhotra calls for collective effort to support rain-flood-hit families
Jammu, September 16: National Conference Additional General Secretary and former
minister, Mr. Ajay Kumar Sadhotra, today made a clarion call to non-governmental and
philanthropic organizations to supplement the governmental initiatives in providing
relief to the people affected by recent torrential rains, flash floods, and cloudbursts
across Jammu and Kashmir.
Speaking at a relief distribution camp at Janipur here, organized by National Conference
District President Mr. Chander Mohan Sharma, Mr. Sadhotra lauded the humanitarian
gesture, terming it as an act that strengthens the bond of compassion and solidarity with
the victims in their hour of distress. He said such collective efforts play a crucial role in
mitigating hardships of those who have suffered irreparable loss due to natural
calamities.
Mr. Sadhotra said that the Omar Abdullah-led government has been on its toes since the
onset of the crisis and has been undertaking Herculean efforts to reach out to the
affected areas and people by providing relief and assistance. He emphasized that despite
the extensive work being carried out by the administration, the involvement of civil
society and socio-political organizations can make a decisive difference in easing the
burden on distressed families.

people’s participation. This is where non-governmental organizations, philanthropists,
and responsible citizens can step in to share the responsibility of humanitarian service,”
he said .
The former Minister expressed deep solidarity with those whose houses, crops, and
sources of livelihood have been damaged due to the unprecedented downpour and flash
floods, and said the magnitude of destruction is such that it cannot be addressed by
governmental efforts alone. Hence this requires the collective will of society to stand
united with the sufferers, he added.
Lauding the efforts of the National Conference District unit led by Mr. Chander Mohan
Sharma for organizing the relief camp, Mr. Sadhotra said such initiatives send out a
strong message of hope and togetherness in the face of adversity. He appealed to people
in general to pool in resources for providing food, clothing, medicines, and other
essential items to the victims. He expressed optimism that Jammu and Kashmir, with its long tradition of communal
harmony and mutual support, will once again rise to the challenge and overcome the
present crisis through collective grit and compassion.

Floods expose administrative failures: Bhalla demands accountability, action

Jammu, September 12: The Working President of the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) and former minister, Mr Raman Bhalla, on Friday strongly condemned the administration for its consistent failure to take necessary flood protection measures over the last decade.
He held the authorities responsible for the large-scale loss of property and agricultural livelihoods in Jammu province, especially in areas severely affected by floods in the last week of August.
During his visit to flood-affected villages, including Dharap, Dharap Kothey, and Shergarh in Jammu district, Mr Bhalla interacted with distressed families and farmers whose lives and means of subsistence have been devastated by the recent floods. He expressed grave concern at the widespread destruction, reporting that hundreds of kanals of standing crops have been washed away or submerged, leaving cultivators in despair.
Mr. Bhalla was accompanied by Sarpanch Kashmir Singh, Balkar Singh, Harbans Singh, Prem Kumar, Ranjit Singh, Surjeet Singh, Dadar Singh, Shanty, Sanjay Katal, and others.

Addressing the gathered residents, Mr Bhalla said, “It is extremely painful to see our hardworking farmers losing their crops once again. The floods have not only damaged agricultural fields but also homes, roads, and basic infrastructure that are lifelines for rural communities. These losses are preventable, and the administration’s failure to implement flood mitigation strategies reflects a lack of foresight and commitment.”
He pointed out that the floods of 2014 had served as a stark warning, yet no long-term flood protection plans have been enforced.
“Instead of learning from past disasters, authorities have repeatedly ignored the need to strengthen riverbanks, upgrade drainage systems, and ensure timely intervention. As a result, vulnerable communities are left exposed to nature’s fury,” Mr Bhalla remarked and regretted that no step was taken to prevent flow of water of Balol Nullah in these areas.
The JKPCC leader further criticized the delay in relief and rehabilitation efforts, noting that affected families are still awaiting compensation and support. “People here are not asking for charity; they are demanding their right to protection and timely assistance. The government must ensure that those who have lost their livelihood are not abandoned to suffer alone,” he added.
During his visit, Mr Bhalla personally inspected damaged fields, spoke to farmers, and assured them that their plight will be raised at all platforms. He also urged district and state authorities to conduct thorough damage assessments and expedite relief packages, including financial assistance, restoration of irrigation channels, and repair of access roads.
Highlighting the broader implications, Mr Bhalla said, “Floods not only destroy crops but also erode the confidence of communities. If protective measures are not implemented in a structured manner, repeated disasters will push rural families into poverty, force migration, and further strain local economies.”
He called for a comprehensive flood management policy that includes regular maintenance of rivers and drainage channels, construction of embankments, early warning systems, and community-level awareness programs.
“It is high time the administration prioritizes disaster preparedness and works hand-in-hand with experts, engineers, and local communities to build resilient infrastructure,” he stated.
Mr Bhalla assured the people that he will continue advocating for the welfare of flood-hit families and pressing the government to act with urgency and responsibility. “The people of Jammu deserve dignity, security, and the means to rebuild their lives. Their voices cannot be ignored,” he affirmed.

Sadhotra voices concern over soil sinking in Kheri, seeks relocation of
families from vulnerable houses
Jammu, September 10: National Conference Additional General Secretary
and former Minister, Mr. Ajay Kumar Sadhotra, today conducted an
extensive visit to the rain and flood-affected areas of Jammu North
Assembly Constituency, with a particular focus on the KHERI area, which is
witnessing soil sinking, cracks in houses, land and continuous erosion posing
a grave threat to life and property.
During his visit, Mr. Sadhotra interacted with the affected families, took
stock of the situation and heard to their first hand experiences. He
expressed serious concern over the alarming situation, saying that many
houses are developing dangerous cracks while some structures are on the
verge of collapse.
The locals apprised him of their constant fear due to the unstable soil
conditions aggravated by the recent spell of heavy rains and floods.
Mr. Sadhotra said that the unfolding situation in Kheri is a stark reminder
that floods and rains are no longer routine seasonal phenomena but are
manifesting in unexpected forms, leading to soil sinking, sudden landslides,
and unusual erosion patterns in areas not earlier known to be vulnerable.
He said that this new challenge requires the government to go beyond
traditional methods of relief and rehabilitation.
Calling for an exhaustive scientific and technical survey, Mr. Sadhotra hoped
that authorities will deploy expert teams to assess the depth of damage and
risk in the affected localities. There is a need for a holistic strategy that
combines immediate relief, long-term rehabilitation and scientific
interventions to prevent further disasters,” he added. The National Conference Additional General Secretary stressed that
relocation of families living in endangered areas to safer locations should be
prioritized. He called for devising an “out-of-box solution” that takes into
account the unpredictability of such natural calamities in newer
geographies.
Mr. Sadhotra reiterated that the Omar Abdullah-led National Conference
government has always been serious about addressing challenges of natural
calamities and remains deeply committed to mitigating the sufferings of the
people. He said the party has a proven track record of standing by the
people during testing times and will continue to play its role with sincerity,
responsibility, and dedication.
He said that natural calamities should not be seen merely as isolated
incidents but as part of a larger climate and environmental challenge, which
requires a comprehensive response from all stakeholders—government
agencies, civil society, and local people.
Reassuring the people of the party’s steadfastness, Mr. Sadhotra said
National Conference will extend every possible support to the affected
families. In difficult situations, the party has always stood shoulder to
shoulder with the people, and will continue to do so with greater vigor, he
added.
Mr. Sadhotra appealed to the administration to take urgent preventive
measures, set up dedicated monitoring cells and create a mechanism for
timely alerts and early evacuation in vulnerable zones to avoid loss of lives
and property in the future.
Those accompanying Mr Sadhotra during his visit to the area included
Raghubir Singh Manhas District President, Ch Bagh Ali Zonal Vice President,
Randhir Singh District Secretary, Rakesh Sharma YNC District President, Ch
Mohd Razak, Ch Abdul Gani.
