Massive Flooding Hits Apna Vihar, Jammu Due to Alleged Illegal Encroachment – Residents Demand Urgent Action
Jammu, August 31, 2025 |
Residents of Apna Vihar Colony near Kunjwani Bypass in Jammu are reeling from heavy losses after severe flooding struck the area on August 26, 2025. The cause, as alleged by locals, is an illegal encroachment over a natural water channel (nala), resulting in water diversion and widespread damage.
A formal letter addressed to the Municipal Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, signed by multiple residents, claims that a few individuals have illegally constructed a bridge over the natural stream adjacent to their properties. This obstruction allegedly disrupted the natural water flow, redirecting floodwaters into residential areas during heavy rains.
"The illegal bridge created a hurdle to the natural flow of water, and on 26th August, the overflowing nala diverted toward the colony, flooding houses up to 5 to 6 feet," the letter states.
Inside homes, water levels rose significantly, damaging furniture, electronics, and household items submerged courtyards, floating debris, and trapped vehicles, confirming the extent of flooding.
According to the complaint, several vehicles, household electronics, furniture, and other essentials were destroyed by mud water. Elderly and children were rescued by timely efforts of local residents amidst the chaos. Municipal authorities to refer to this damage report and take immediate action against those responsible for the encroachment.
The residents have pleaded for the removal of the illegal construction and restoration of the natural flow of the nala to prevent future disasters. They have also submitted photos and videos as evidence.
As monsoon threats continue, the affected families demand accountability and swift administrative intervention.
