Kavinder Gupta takes oath as new Ladakh LG

: Senior BJP leader on Friday took oath as the new lieutenant governor (LG) of the Union Territory of Ladakh, four days after President Droupadi Murmu appointed him to the constitutional post.

Gupta was administered the oath of office by the chief justice of the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court, Justice Arun Palli, at a ceremony held at Ladakh Raj Niwas in Leh, officials said.

Chief Secretary Pawan Kotwal read the warrant of Gupta's appointment by President Droupadi Murmu.

He is the third Lieutenant Governor of the Union Territory and succeeds Brigadier B D Mishra, who took over as LG of the Union Territory on February 19, 2024. Mishra had succeeded R K Mathur, a bureaucrat appointed as the first LG of Ladakh in 2019, after the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir was split into two Union Territories.

President Murmu appointed Gupta as the new Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh on Monday.

Gupta has held several key posts in the past, both in the government and within his party.

Rahul Gandhi, Kharge Urge PM Modi to Restore Statehood for Jammu & Kashmir

NEW DELHI: In a significant political development, Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge have jointly written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, demanding the immediate restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.

Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, who leads the Opposition in Rajya Sabha, emphasized that J&K is the only former state to be downgraded to a Union Territory in independent India—calling it an "unprecedented step" that must be reversed to uphold democratic values and the constitutional rights of its people.

The letter urged the Prime Minister to bring a Statehood Restoration Bill in the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament, scheduled to begin on July 21. The leaders stated that the people of Jammu and Kashmir have waited long enough and deserve the restoration of their democratic rights, representative governance, and legislative powers.

The Congress leaders also raised the issue of Ladakh, demanding the introduction of legislation to bring the Union Territory under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution to ensure protections for tribal and indigenous communities living there.

The appeal marks a renewed political push by the Congress Party to highlight Jammu & Kashmir’s downgraded status post the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019 and the subsequent bifurcation of the state.

This move is expected to trigger heated debate during the upcoming parliamentary session, with the Opposition likely to press the government for answers and a clear roadmap.

JKSSB Defers Application Process for 75 Naib Tehsildar Posts Until Further Orders

: The and Services Selection Board ( ) has deferred the application process for 75 Naib Tehsildar posts, which was scheduled to commence this week. The decision comes amid ongoing controversy surrounding the inclusion of Urdu as a compulsory language in the recruitment eligibility.

A brief notification issued by the JKSSB on Tuesday stated that the application process stands deferred till further orders, without citing a specific reason. However, the move follows mounting criticism and protests by several aspirants and political groups over language-related eligibility conditions.

Many candidates had raised objections, arguing that making Urdu mandatory limits opportunities for a vast number of qualified applicants.
