IPR Department (Soreng) conducts “One Day at School” Programme at Don Bosco School, Malbasey
Soreng, 22 July (IPR): As part of the Soreng District Administration’s initiative, the District Information Centre (DIC) Soreng under the Information and Public Relations Department (IPRD), organised a “One Day at School” programme at Don Bosco School, Malbasey, today.
The programme aimed at sensitising students about various government department, their functioning, schemes and developmental initiatives. It is focused on equipping students with the necessary information and understanding to make informed decisions regarding their academic and career choices.
The session commenced with a welcome and introductory note delivered by the District Information Officer (DIO, Soreng) Dr. Aaron E Lepcha, where he gave the students a brief overview of the functioning of District Information Centre (DIC) Soreng and Information and Public Relations Department (IPRD), explaining its functions and purpose. He then, explained that IPRD acts as a bridge between the government, press and the public by sharing official news and information.
He further, highlighted the various sections within the department, including the Digital Archive Section, Film Section, E-News, Sikkim Herald and its active use of social media platforms for public outreach. Also, he informed the students that each district in the state has its own IPRD office known as the District Information Centre (DIC) to ensure that proper information reaches to the public via social media, newspapers and other modes of communication.
While concluding, he spoke about the career prospects in the field of Journalism and Media, encouraging students to consider these paths. He suggested academic establishments offering relevant courses and emphasised the growing importance of media.
Senior Information Assistant (Soreng) Mr Phurba D Lepcha delivered a presentation on Journalism, where he provided an overview of the field, highlighting its purpose, the essential skills required and the ethical responsibilities that come with the profession. He also touched upon the various types and objectives of journalism, helping students understand its diverse forms and functions. Emphasising the fundamentals, he outlined the key elements of good journalism that included accuracy, objectivity, fairness, independence, accountability and truthfulness and stressed their importance in maintaining credibility.
Another presentation was delivered by Senior Information Assistant (Soreng), Ms Semi S***a, who acknowledged the initiative undertaken by the District Administration, Soreng. In her presentation, she emphasised the importance of the reporting process and its role in effective communication. She also highlighted several challenges commonly faced during the reporting process and underscored the consistent efforts made to ensure accuracy and timeliness in the dissemination of information.
The session on Photography was conducted by a Photographer Mr Siddhartha B Gurung who introduced the students to the fundamentals of photography including key technical aspects such as composition, lighting and subject framing. He also stressed on the different genres of photography.
Additionally, he also explained the basic working of a camera, covering important concepts. He then, introduced the rule of thirds as a guiding principle in photography and highlighted the overall importance of visual storytelling in media.
Mr Avinai S***a delivered a session on Videography and Editing, where he introduced the basics of videography and explained key elements such as lighting, framing, sound, movement and frames per second (FPS). He familiarised students with different types of camera shots and covered essential editing techniques, including cutting clips, adding sound, inserting text and applying transitions. He concluded the session by highlighting a few career opportunities in the field.
The programme concluded with an interactive session where the school faculty appreciated the efforts of the District Administration Soreng and the IPR Department for organising such an informative and engaging programme.
