Late Shri Hem Kumar Gurung has passed away on 22July 2025 at Chakung Lepcha Gown Soreng,District Sikkim.

Therefore, all relatives expressing their condolences to the neighbors and bereaved families, on behalf of all the bereaved family to attend the last rites of the deceased on 05/08/2025 at the ancestral residence of the deceased.

IPRD Chairman Visits District Information Centre (Soreng)

Soreng, July 23 (IPR): As part of an official state-wide tour, the Chairman of the Information and Public Relations Department (IPRD), Mr Ash*t Rai, visited the District Information Centre (DIC) under IPRD in Soreng today to review its functioning and interact with the local staff.

The Chairman (IPRD) was warmly received by District Information Officer (DIO) Dr. Aaron E Lepcha along the team of officials and staff. The visit is aimed at strengthening coordination and improving communication across all six districts of Sikkim.

During the interaction, Mr Ash*t Rai expressed his appreciation to Chief Minister Mr Prem Singh Tamang for entrusting him with the responsibility as the Chairperson for IPRD. He engaged in a brief discussion with the DIO and staff, reviewing current activities, infrastructure needs, and challenges faced by the DIC.

Reflecting on his experience in the media sector, Mr Ash*t Rai acknowledged the demands of the profession and commended the staff for their consistent efforts whilst encouraging them to work with utmost dedication.

Following the Soreng visit, Mr Ash*t Rai is scheduled to visit the District Information Centre in Gyalshing as part of his continuing district tour.

Class 8 Student Alleges sexually Harassment by Uncle in Gyalshing, Arrested under POCSO

A Class 8 student from Gyalshing district has accused her maternal uncle of repeated harassment, leading to his arrest under the POCSO Act.

The incident came to light on July 21, 2025, after the girl confided in her teacher, who promptly filed a police complaint. According to the FIR, the accused, often under the influence of alcohol, misbehaved with the minor and showed her inappropriate videos on social media.

The girl also stated that he made offensive remarks when confronted. The accused was arrested the same day, and further investigation is underway.

WOMAN APPREHENDED WITH 79.44 GRAMS OF BROWN SUGAR BY SADAR POLICE

On the evening of 21st July 2025, a team of Sadar Police Station apprehended one Januka Chettri alias Unika, 24 years, resident of Phongla, Namthang, Namchi District, from a hotel located at Panihouse, Gangtok.

During the search and seizure, a total of 79.44 grams of suspected Brown Sugar was recovered from her possession. In compliance with legal provisions, the arrest was effected only after obtaining an arrest order from the Hon’ble Judicial Magistrate, Gangtok, as women cannot be arrested after sunset without judicial sanction.

A case under relevant sections of the NDPS Act has been registered, and further investigation is in progress.

Sikkim Police remains committed to its fight against the menace of drugs and urges the public to report any such suspicious activities.

One Dead in Vehicle Accident Between Rambi and Kalijhora

A fatal road accident has been reported at Break Dara, located between Rambi and Kalijhora, involving a passenger vehicle bearing registration number SK02J1022. The vehicle was reportedly operating on the Gyalsing to Siliguri route.

IPR Department (Soreng) conducts “One Day at School” Programme at Don Bosco School, Malbasey

Soreng, 22 July (IPR): As part of the Soreng District Administration’s initiative, the District Information Centre (DIC) Soreng under the Information and Public Relations Department (IPRD), organised a “One Day at School” programme at Don Bosco School, Malbasey, today.

The programme aimed at sensitising students about various government department, their functioning, schemes and developmental initiatives. It is focused on equipping students with the necessary information and understanding to make informed decisions regarding their academic and career choices.

The session commenced with a welcome and introductory note delivered by the District Information Officer (DIO, Soreng) Dr. Aaron E Lepcha, where he gave the students a brief overview of the functioning of District Information Centre (DIC) Soreng and Information and Public Relations Department (IPRD), explaining its functions and purpose. He then, explained that IPRD acts as a bridge between the government, press and the public by sharing official news and information.

He further, highlighted the various sections within the department, including the Digital Archive Section, Film Section, E-News, Sikkim Herald and its active use of social media platforms for public outreach. Also, he informed the students that each district in the state has its own IPRD office known as the District Information Centre (DIC) to ensure that proper information reaches to the public via social media, newspapers and other modes of communication.

While concluding, he spoke about the career prospects in the field of Journalism and Media, encouraging students to consider these paths. He suggested academic establishments offering relevant courses and emphasised the growing importance of media.

Senior Information Assistant (Soreng) Mr Phurba D Lepcha delivered a presentation on Journalism, where he provided an overview of the field, highlighting its purpose, the essential skills required and the ethical responsibilities that come with the profession. He also touched upon the various types and objectives of journalism, helping students understand its diverse forms and functions. Emphasising the fundamentals, he outlined the key elements of good journalism that included accuracy, objectivity, fairness, independence, accountability and truthfulness and stressed their importance in maintaining credibility.

Another presentation was delivered by Senior Information Assistant (Soreng), Ms Semi S***a, who acknowledged the initiative undertaken by the District Administration, Soreng. In her presentation, she emphasised the importance of the reporting process and its role in effective communication. She also highlighted several challenges commonly faced during the reporting process and underscored the consistent efforts made to ensure accuracy and timeliness in the dissemination of information.

The session on Photography was conducted by a Photographer Mr Siddhartha B Gurung who introduced the students to the fundamentals of photography including key technical aspects such as composition, lighting and subject framing. He also stressed on the different genres of photography.

Additionally, he also explained the basic working of a camera, covering important concepts. He then, introduced the rule of thirds as a guiding principle in photography and highlighted the overall importance of visual storytelling in media.

Mr Avinai S***a delivered a session on Videography and Editing, where he introduced the basics of videography and explained key elements such as lighting, framing, sound, movement and frames per second (FPS). He familiarised students with different types of camera shots and covered essential editing techniques, including cutting clips, adding sound, inserting text and applying transitions. He concluded the session by highlighting a few career opportunities in the field.

The programme concluded with an interactive session where the school faculty appreciated the efforts of the District Administration Soreng and the IPR Department for organising such an informative and engaging programme.

32-Year-Old Man Found Murdered Near Krishi Bhawan; Retired Forest Official Surrenders

Gangtok, July 22: A shocking murder has been reported near Krishi Bhawan, Gangtok, where a man estimated to be around 32 years old was found dead in the courtyard of a private residence.

According to police sources, a retired forest official has surrendered and admitted to the crime. The motive behind the incident is yet to be confirmed.

Police have cordoned off the crime scene and a full investigation is currently underway. Forensic teams and senior officials are on site gathering evidence.

Further details are awaited as the investigation progresses.
