Cambodia-Thailand Border Clash Escalates, Diplomatic Ties Downgraded
Tensions between Cambodia and Thailand surged on Thursday as their armies engaged in fierce clashes at two locations along their disputed border, marking a significant escalation in a long-standing territorial dispute.
Both sides deployed heavy weaponry, including rockets and artillery, in the confrontations, raising fears of further violence in the region.
The clashes reportedly erupted near the contested Preah Vihear temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and another border area, though exact locations remain unconfirmed. Casualty figures are unclear, but both nations have accused each other of initiating the hostilities. The conflict stems from a decades-old dispute over a 4.6-square-kilometer area near the temple, exacerbated by competing historical claims and recent military buildups.
In response, Cambodia and Thailand downgraded diplomatic relations, recalling their ambassadors and issuing strongly worded statements condemning each other's actions. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet called for an immediate ceasefire, while Thailand’s leadership accused Cambodia of violating bilateral agreements.
Previous clashes in 2011 resulted in significant casualties, and fears are growing that the current conflict could spiral further without swift intervention. Both countries have agreed to emergency talks, but the path to peace remains uncertain.
