Karnataka govt. take up Fish culture on cluster mode in four districts on a pilot basis under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojna at a cost of Rs 3.44 crore for two years
----------

KALABURAGI: The State government has decided to take up a comprehensive Fish culture programme on cluster mode in four districts on a pilot basis under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojna at a cost of Rs 3.44 crore for two years. A sum of Rs 1.72 crore has been released for 2015-16.

Official sources told on Tuesday that the programme would be implemented in Nanjangud and T. Narsipur in Mysuru district; Davanagere and Harihar in Davanagere district; Ballari and Siraguppa in Ballari District; and Bilagi and Jamkhandi in Bagalkot district.

Potential Sources said that Karnataka had a good potential for the comprehensive development of Fish culture on land which was unfit for agriculture. Farmers willing to take up Fish culture on their land would have to be updated with the latest scientific developments in the field.

As per the information available with the government, farmers have now taken up Fish culture on 1,800 hectares (ha) and in most of the cases the projects had not yielded the desired results due to lack of knowledge among farmers.

Under the proposed programme, the government proposes to train farmers in intensive production, setting up of a cold storage chain, and production of protein rich food for fish in ponds. It will also open up avenues for marketing.

The stress would be on constructing fish ponds on land which was unfit for agriculture.

The government would provide 50 per cent subsidy for the construction of fish ponds, whose cost has been fixed at. Rs 5 lakh a hectare. The maximum size limit for a fish pond is five hectares. Of the total investment of Rs. 2 lakh for taking up the fish farming in one hectare of land, the government would provide Rs. 1 lakh as subsidy. Fifty per cent of subsidy would be provided for the raising of fingerlings.

To popularise fish farming, the State government has released Rs. 77.81 lakh to the Karnataka Veterinary and Fisheries University in Bidar, and University of Agriculture Sciences in Bengaluru, Dharwad, Raichur and Shivamogga to organise Fish Melas during the annual Krishi Melas. Already some of the universities have organised Fish Melas along with Krishi Melas

AP State Government Admits Destruction of Fish Tanks Beyond Contour 5 in Kolleru Freshwater Lake

VIJAYAWADA: The state government has admitted that fish tanks over and above contour No: 5 had been destroyed to ‘some extent’ as no geographical boundaries had been fixed for contour five when the operation took place in 2006.

Kolleru lake size has been reduced to contour five and steps had to be taken to protect the lake but not disturb any fishing activity over contour five.

AP Environment and Forest Special chief secretary AK Parida, explaining to an expert panel, deputed by the National Board of Wild Life, to study the situation at Kolleru lake for protection of wildlife, said that the fish tanks that had been destroyed were identified based on survey numbers which led to removal of tanks in area over Contour No: 5.

West Godavari District Collector K Bhaskar told the visiting expert panel that one reason for the mistake was that the tanks were quite large extending from one contour to another and when tanks in area above contour five were destroyed, those in contour five too were destroyed.

The expert panel headed by Prof Sukumar, included Vasista. The two member team after visiting the Kolleru lake area, conferred with Parida, the collector of West Godavari, Joint Collector of Krishna and conservator of forest Srinivas.

In the meeting, West Godavari collector informed the panel that 1,140 fish tanks had been destroyed in an area of 29,949 acres within the Kolleru lake area in the past. The total area had then been transferred to Forest Department on May 31, 2006. Krishna Joint Collector told the committee members that 636 tanks in an area of 17,449 acres had been destroyed.

The central committee inquired how Kolleru Lake would survive if the state government’s Polavaram Right Main Canal sucked all the water from the drains which should flow into the lake. In reply, Parida told the committee members that Pattiseema and Polavarm Left Main canal intend to divert only flood waters and that the project would not tap the regular flow of after into the lake

Floods force MPEDA to abandon international seafood show, Now held at Visakhapatnam sometime in middle of next year.

KOCHI: The floods in Chennai have forced the Marine Products Export Development Authority to abandon the India International Seafood Show which was to be held at the Chennai Trade Centre from January 22-24.

This comes at a time when India has made huge strides in marine products exports which in 2014-15 were at an all-time high. The biennial seafood show, organised by MPEDA in partnership with the Seafood Exporters’ Association of India, highlights India’s potential in the seafood sector. It is one of the major seafood fairs in Asia.

The show will now be held at Visakhapatnam sometime in the middle of next year.

The 19th edition of the show was held in Chennai in January 2014. The IIFS, which began in 1973 in Mumbai, has emerged as an important platform for stakeholders in the seafood exports sector. Apart from seafood exporters, the show attracts seafood farmers — especially vannamei shrimp producers — manufacturers of processing machines, traders and those engaged in allied sectors.

Sources pointed out that because of the floods, a crucial meeting of the organising committee, scheduled for December 2, could not be held. However, procedural delays and bureaucratic hurdles also contributed to the abandonment of the Chennai fair.
