Today, along with the District Magistrate and other senior officials, I visited the areas in Darjeeling District that have been affected by heavy rainfall. The intense rains that occurred last night between 18th and 19th June 2026 have triggered landslides and created minor flood-like situations in several parts of the district.

During my visit, I personally inspected the site at Dudhey where the temporary Hume Pipe bridge on State Highway 12 (SH-12) over the Balason River has been washed away. The bridge across Balason River in Dudhey is of vital importance as it serves as the main link on SH-12 connecting the entire Mirik valley to Siliguri and lies along the strategically sensitive Indo-Nepal border region. Restoring permanent and reliable connectivity at the earliest is therefore extremely critical.

It may be recalled that the original bridge at this location was washed away on 5th October 2025. The Trinamool Congress government had chosen to construct a temporary Hume Pipe bridge here. This temporary structure has now been washed away due to last night’s heavy rainfall. I am concerned that continuing with such structures poses the risk of being washed away repeatedly during the monsoon.

With the monsoon season only just beginning and expected to intensify in the coming weeks, a more durable solution is urgently required.

I have therefore requested the Hon'ble Chief Minister Sh. Suvendu Adhikari ji to kindly engage the Army and/or BRO to construct a Bailey Bridge at this location so that normal connectivity can be restored at the earliest.

I have also requested for the supply of additional resources including JCBs and bulldozers along with necessary personnel, and deployment of SDRF/NDRF units in various parts of Darjeeling hills, Terai and Dooars region for quick response.

The district administration has created alternative routes for heavy vehicles and passenger vehicles to ensure connectivity and safety of the people who need to travel.

The safety and well-being of the people of our region remains the top priority for BJP government in the state, and we will continue to monitor the situation round the clock.

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the Hon'ble Governor of West Bengal H.E Sh. R N Ravi ji, and the Hon'ble Chief Minister Sh. Suvendu Adhikari ji, for their commitment towards finding a Permanent Political Solution for our region.

During the first Budget Session of the West Bengal State Assembly, H.E Governor RN Ravi ji stated, “My government is committed to arriving at a Permanent Political Solution to the long drawn Gorkhaland issue through negotiations with all the stakeholders.”

We welcome this statement and thank Hon'ble Chief Minister Sh. Suvendu Adhikari ji for placing the Permanent Political Solution for our region among the top priorities of the BJP government.

Today, Hon’ble Chief Minister Sh. Suvendu Adhikari Ji visited Kurseong on his first official visit to the Darjeeling Hills after assuming office.

Addressing a large public gathering at Monteviot Ground Hon'ble Chief Minister outlined a comprehensive roadmap aimed at addressing long-pending regional challenges and unlocking new opportunities for the growth of our region. He also unveiled concrete plans to improve infrastructure, livelihoods, healthcare, education, and public services in our region.

He reiterated the commitment to establish a Medical College in Kalimpong, with land already identified at Dungra, while also strengthening healthcare facilities across Kurseong, Darjeeling, and Kalimpong region.

The Chief Minister announced enhanced investments in education and sports infrastructure, including improved schools, digital classrooms, girls’ hostels, and facilities to nurture local talent.

Highlighting employment generation and rural development as a priority, CM Adhikari ji announced that the Viksit Bharat Rural Employment Scheme (G-RAM G) will be launched from July 1, 2026, providing 125 days of wage employment annually through rural development projects.

He also outlined key development priorities including improved road connectivity, disaster mitigation and management, tourism promotion, disaster preparedness, skill development, women’s empowerment, and youth-focused initiatives.

Sh. Suvendu Adhikari ji also announced the recruitment of over 1000 Gorkha youths in Eastern Frontier Rifles and West Bengal Police, thus ensuring EFR revival.

Under the TMC Govt, implementation of Pradhan Mantri Chai Shramik Protsahan Yojana initiated by the Hon'ble Prime Minister Sh. Narendra Modi ji had been stalled. Today Hon'ble CM assured that the BJP government will use the PMCSPY funds to revive the tea industry, including the 25 tea gardens in the region that have been shut down.

Honouring those activists who had been martyred as a result of brutality under TMC Government, Hon'ble Chief Minister Suvbendu ji said that BJP Government will give employment to one family member of each martyr family and give Rs 5 lakh compensation to them.

The Chief Minister further assured close coordination with Central Government to ensure rapid implementation of development projects for our region. He assured that his government will work to ensuring that the hills receive their due share of development, and fulfilment of their aspirations.

On behalf of the people from Darjeeling hills, Terai and Dooars, I applaud the vision of inclusive development as envisioned by CM Suvendu ji and assure of our full cooperation towards realizing his vision on the ground.
