Meghalaya Police Nab 18 Bangladeshi Nationals Near Dawki Border

West Jaintia Hills (Meghalaya) : In a significant pre-dawn operation close to the India–Bangladesh border, West Jaintia Hills police intercepted 18 Bangladeshi nationals along with two Indian touts, officials said on Wednesday.
The coordinated crackdown began around 3 am, when a special team of the district police, assisted by the headman and Village Defence Party (VDP) members of Demthring village, moved to intercept vehicles suspected of ferrying undocumented migrants towards Dawki.
Based on specific intelligence inputs indicating movement from Jowai to Dawki, police first stopped a vehicle bearing registration number ML-04D/7339 near Sanmala Guest House in Amlarem after a chase from Lad Demthring. Four Bangladeshi nationals were found inside the vehicle, which was being driven by Vishal Dkhar, a resident of Dawki.
During the same phase of the operation, police detained two Indian nationals — Meban Dkhar and Melari Rasmut — at Lad Demthring along with their vehicle (ML-04D/4739), identifying them as touts involved in the transportation network.
Interrogation of the detained persons revealed that more vehicles carrying Bangladeshi nationals were en route towards Dawki. Acting swiftly, police set up naka checking points in the Amlarem market area, where three additional vehicles were intercepted around 3:45 am.
The vehicles stopped included ML-05AD/6424 driven by Blessing Pamthied of Jarain village, ML-04D/4993 driven by Twel Rongngi of Shkentalang village and ML-04E/0640 driven by Rimi Lyngdoh, also from Shkentalang village. A total of 14 Bangladeshi nationals were found travelling in these vehicles.
In all, five vehicles were seized and 18 Bangladeshi nationals, two Indian touts and five drivers were taken into custody. Police said a case has been registered and all the apprehended persons will be proceeded against under the provisions of the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025.
The Superintendent of Police, West Jaintia Hills district, reaffirmed the police department’s resolve to secure the international border and curb illegal movement. He also urged local headmen and Village Defence Parties to continue cooperating with law enforcement agencies to prevent unlawful border crossings and ensure community safety.
