Meghalaya Police Nab 18 Bangladeshi Nationals Near Dawki Border

NewsLyte Report

West Jaintia Hills (Meghalaya) : In a significant pre-dawn operation close to the India–Bangladesh border, West Jaintia Hills police intercepted 18 Bangladeshi nationals along with two Indian touts, officials said on Wednesday.

The coordinated crackdown began around 3 am, when a special team of the district police, assisted by the headman and Village Defence Party (VDP) members of Demthring village, moved to intercept vehicles suspected of ferrying undocumented migrants towards Dawki.

Based on specific intelligence inputs indicating movement from Jowai to Dawki, police first stopped a vehicle bearing registration number ML-04D/7339 near Sanmala Guest House in Amlarem after a chase from Lad Demthring. Four Bangladeshi nationals were found inside the vehicle, which was being driven by Vishal Dkhar, a resident of Dawki.

During the same phase of the operation, police detained two Indian nationals — Meban Dkhar and Melari Rasmut — at Lad Demthring along with their vehicle (ML-04D/4739), identifying them as touts involved in the transportation network.

Interrogation of the detained persons revealed that more vehicles carrying Bangladeshi nationals were en route towards Dawki. Acting swiftly, police set up naka checking points in the Amlarem market area, where three additional vehicles were intercepted around 3:45 am.

The vehicles stopped included ML-05AD/6424 driven by Blessing Pamthied of Jarain village, ML-04D/4993 driven by Twel Rongngi of Shkentalang village and ML-04E/0640 driven by Rimi Lyngdoh, also from Shkentalang village. A total of 14 Bangladeshi nationals were found travelling in these vehicles.

In all, five vehicles were seized and 18 Bangladeshi nationals, two Indian touts and five drivers were taken into custody. Police said a case has been registered and all the apprehended persons will be proceeded against under the provisions of the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025.

The Superintendent of Police, West Jaintia Hills district, reaffirmed the police department’s resolve to secure the international border and curb illegal movement. He also urged local headmen and Village Defence Parties to continue cooperating with law enforcement agencies to prevent unlawful border crossings and ensure community safety.

KIUG 2023: Jain University’s Sudanese cager Riek Gatkuoth enjoys competing at ‘happy hunting space’

Guwahati, Feb 21: The Khelo India University Games (KIUG) has been a happy hunting space for Sudan’s Riek Gatkuoth, who landed in Guwahati as a member of the defending champion unit.

Gatkuoth is part of Jain University, which went down narrowly to Panjab University 87-89 in the semi-finals of the men’s basketball events in the ongoing KIUG 2023 Ashtalakshmi.

Gatkuoth, who was born in South Sudan but brought up in Kenya, joined the Jain University two years back, and has already been part of the gold medal-winning team in the previous edition. The heartbreak in Guwahati, however, keeps him motivated, as he’s looking forward to another year at the university, and possibly another shot at a podium finish.

“I am originally from South Sudan but I grew up in Kenya till high school then I came to India and joined Jain University in Bangalore. This is not only my second year in Jain University but also my second Khelo India University Games, hopefully one more year is there. Last year we won the gold medal,” Gatkuoth said.

It’s been almost a decade since the now 23-year-old took up the sport back home, where he feels the competition level is tough despite lack of good infrastructure.

“Most of the equipments are not there and also there are no good courts. But the competition is tough there. Let’s say there is a court when you go to play, you will find like tall players, strongly-built players, competition would be tough compared to India that’s how I feel,” he said.

Gatkuoth, who looks up to the legendary Kevin Durant as his role model, landed in India after his plans of travelling to Canada for training got derailed. “My brother was already in India pursuing engineering, and I was supposed to go to Canada for further training. But the process got delayed so my dad sent me to India for doing BCA,” he explained.

Commenting on his experience of featuring at the prestigious KIUG, Gatkuoth said, “Khelo India is one of the best tournaments I know, with the best of facilities along with good referees and medical facilities”.
