Here’s a step-by-step guide to starting a manual car, explaining the use of gears, clutch, and race (accelerator) point-wise:
1. Ensure Safety Before Starting
Seatbelt: Fasten your seatbelt for safety.
Mirrors: Adjust your mirrors (ORVM and rear-view mirror) for better visibility.
Handbrake: Ensure the handbrake is engaged.
2. Insert the Key and Turn the Ignition
Neutral Gear: Make sure the gear lever is in the neutral position 👎 before starting the car.
Turn the Key: Insert the key into the ignition and turn it to start the engine.
3. Press the Clutch Pedal
Full Press: Press the clutch pedal fully to disengage the engine from the wheels. This prevents the car from moving when shifting into gear.
4. Shift to 1st Gear
Gear Lever: With the clutch fully pressed, move the gear lever to the 1st gear position (usually top-left).
5. Release the Handbrake
Handbrake: Release the handbrake by lowering it. Make sure to do this slowly if you're on an incline.
6. Gently Release the Clutch to the Bite Point
Clutch Control: Slowly release the clutch pedal until you feel the car slightly move forward (this is the bite point).
Hold at Bite Point: At this point, the clutch and engine start to engage.
7. Apply Light Pressure on the Accelerator (Race Pedal)
Gentle Acceleration: Apply light pressure on the accelerator to rev the engine slightly (about 1,500 RPM) while maintaining control of the clutch at the bite point.
8. Gradually Release the Clutch
Smooth Release: As you continue to press the accelerator, slowly and smoothly release the clutch pedal completely to avoid jerking or stalling.
9. Accelerate Smoothly
Steady Acceleration: Once the clutch is fully released, continue to press the accelerator smoothly to gain speed.
10. Shift to Higher Gears
When to Shift: As the car gains speed, typically around 2,500-3,000 RPM, press the clutch again and shift to 2nd gear. Repeat the process of releasing the clutch and pressing the accelerator.
