The Three Main Resume Formats
The Standard Reverse-Chronological Resume Structure (Section-by-Section)
Here’s what to include, from top to bottom.
1. Contact Information (Header)
Keep it clean and professional.
· Full Name (Large, bold font)
· Phone Number
· Professional Email Address (e.g., [email protected])
· Location (City, State) - Full address is not necessary.
· LinkedIn Profile URL (Customize your LinkedIn URL)
· Portfolio or Personal Website URL (If relevant)
2. Professional Summary (or Objective)
· What it is: A 2-3 sentence "elevator pitch" at the top of your resume.
· What to include: Your professional title, years of experience, key skills, and what you aim to achieve in your next role. Tailor this to the specific job you're applying for.
· Example:
"Results-driven Marketing Manager with 8+ years of experience specializing in digital strategy, brand development, and data-driven campaign management. Proven track record of increasing organic traffic by over 200% and reducing customer acquisition cost by 30%. Seeking to leverage expertise to drive growth at a innovative tech company."
3. Work Experience
This is the core of your resume.
· Order: List your jobs in reverse-chronological order (most recent first).
· For each position, include:
· Job Title
· Company Name & Location (City, State)
· Dates of Employment (Month, Year – Month, Year)
· Bullet Points: Use 3-5 bullet points per job to describe your responsibilities and achievements.
· Use Action Verbs: Start each bullet with a verb like Managed, Developed, Increased, Led, Implemented, Analyzed, Spearheaded.
· Quantify Your Achievements: Use numbers wherever possible to show impact. This is the most important rule for making your resume stand out.
· Instead of: "Responsible for social media accounts."
· Write: "Grew social media engagement by 40% across 3 platforms, resulting in a 15% increase in lead generation."
4. Skills Section
Make this section easy to scan. Categorize your skills if possible.
· Technical/Hard Skills: Python, SQL, Adobe Creative Suite, Google Analytics, SEMRush, Salesforce, etc.
· Soft Skills: Leadership, Project Management, Communication, Problem-Solving, Team Collaboration, etc.
5. Education
· Order: List your highest degree first.
· Include: Degree Name, University Name, Location, and Graduation Year (or expected year).
· If you're a recent graduate, you can include your GPA (if it's high, e.g., 3.5+), relevant coursework, honors, and academic projects.
· For experienced professionals, this section can be brief.
6. Optional Sections (Include if you have space and they are relevant)
· Certifications: (e.g., PMP, Google Analytics Certified, CPA)
· Projects: Showcase specific, relevant projects that demonstrate your skills.
· Awards & Honors:
· Languages:
· Professional Affiliations:
