Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed strong criticism of the Centre, stating that it has repeatedly failed to honour the promises made to the people. Referring to the arrest of activist Sonam Wangchuk, Abdullah remarked that the move was not unexpected, given the Centre’s sustained pressure on him.

“The Centre makes commitments but does not follow through. Since the Centre was after him, Sonam Wangchuk’s arrest was expected. Even in Jammu & Kashmir, people participated in elections with faith, but the promises made to them were also left unfulfilled. I do not understand what compulsions the Centre is facing,” Abdullah said.

The Union Home Ministry (MHA) has cancelled the FCRA license of SECMOL, founded by climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, with immediate effect. This comes after violent clashes in Leh that left 4 civilians dead, 90 injured, and caused damage to BJP & Hill Council offices, vehicles, and public property.

Police have registered multiple FIRs, detained over 50 people, and hinted at action under the Public Safety Act against those accused of instigating violence. Curfew continues in Leh for the second day, with schools, colleges, and coaching centres ordered shut for two days.

Meanwhile, the MHA has opened doors for dialogue, holding a meeting with the Leh Apex Body (LAB) today. A preparatory meeting with LAB & KDA is set to take place in New Delhi on Sept 27/28, to be followed by an official meeting of the High-Powered Committee on key demands — including Statehood, Sixth Schedule, and two Lok Sabha seats for Ladakh.
“The preparatory meeting shall be followed by an immediate official meeting of the Home Ministry with High Powered Committee comprising of seven members each from LAB and KDA on four-point agenda,” a joint statement issued late this evening by LAB leaders Thupstan Chhewang and Chering Dorjay, said.
Earlier in the day, bodies of four civilians killed in police and paramilitary personnel’s firing during violence in Leh yesterday were handed over to their families.
They have been identified as Tsewang Tharchin, 46 R/o Skurbuchan, who had retired from Ladakh Scouts Regiment, Stanzin Namgayal, 24, a resident of Igoo, Jigmet Dorjay, who hails from Kharnakling and Rinchen Dadul, 21, a resident of Hanu.
Officials said a total of 90 persons were injured, seven of them seriously and 20 suffering from major trauma. One of the critically injured persons was airlifted to New Delhi through Air Force aircraft today. However, by this evening, only 18 persons were admitted in the hospitals including seven who underwent major complicated surgeries.
