The long-pending demand for Central OBC status by the Bishnupriya Manipuri linguistic minority in Assam remains unaddressed by the Central Government. While the community continues to await recognition, some political figures are reportedly leveraging the issue for personal visibility. Recently, both new and familiar faces from the community were seen holding discussions over tea and snacks with Assam Pradesh BJP OBC Morcha President, Sri Subash Dutta and Assam Backward Classes Commission Chairperson, Sri Santanu Gogoi. This comes just days after a few community delegations from two organizations met NCBC Chairperson Hansraj Gangaram Ahir in New Delhi.

Allegations have surfaced against the Nikhil Bishnupriya Manipuri Sahitya Parishad, Assam, accusing it of spreading false information within the community. Critics say the organisation, despite being one of the junior community bodies is attempting to hide its own shortcomings by issuing misleading statements, particularly regarding the implementation of NEP 2020.

According to opposing groups, the Parishad is allegedly creating confusion among community members by blaming other organisations instead of addressing its failures. Several Bishnupriya Manipuri organisations have strongly criticised what they describe as divisive propaganda, condemning the move as harmful to community unity, integrity and harmony.

An alleged long-standing mutual understanding often referred to as a “1-by-1” MLA rotation formula among Bengali, Bishnupriya Manipuri and Hindi speaking leaders is once again fueling discontent in Patharkandi. Will the BJP finally back a native candidate like 2 time ZPC Santilal Sinha from the Bishnupriya Manipuri community or continue fielding Karimganj based leaders, sidelining local voices?

Speculation is rising in Patharkandi over an alleged unofficial agreement among local communities, in which the MLA seat would rotate between Bengali, Bishnupriya Manipuri and Hindi speaking leaders. The Bishnupriya Manipuri community is now questioning the fairness and authenticity of this “1-by-1” tenure rotation formula, especially since former senior BJP leader and Ex MLA Kartik Sena Sinha distanced himself from the party before completing his full term. Adding to the controversy, leaders from Karimganj including Ex MLA Sukhendu Sekhar Dutta and the current BJP MLA have repeatedly contested from Patharkandi, raising concerns about fair community representation. Is this truly a mutual understanding or a form of political occupancy? The matter demands clarity.

BMDC Chairperson Rita Sinha, who had earlier claimed that the Assam Government had allocated land in Guwahati for a Bishnupriya Manipuri community guest house, a claim yet to be verified by the community!! has now shifted her focus to development work, primarily related to religious infrastructure.

On August 1, BMDC Chairperson Rita Sinha laid the foundation stone for a community hall at the Athoibaba Temple in Patharkandi Paruwa Gang with ₹-5 lakh sanctioned by the Assam Government. She also announced additional projects in Bazaricherra and Balipipla. Earlier, community members raised concerns over the untraceable guest house land, comparing it to the unfulfilled ₹-100 crore development fund announced years ago by Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma during a political rally in Patharkandi, a promise still unrealized by the Bishnupriya Manipuri community.

Linguistic minority community-Bishnupriya Manipuri voters in Ratabari Constituency, particularly from the Dullabcherra area are victims of political neglect. The community is alarmed by the silence of local leaders after recent floods damaged the Hingala River bank near Joynagar village.

The broken riverbank road is a vital lifeline for several villages, including Samargang, Pechala, Ullashnagar, Rupagram, Khehurgang, Khiluwa and Pachdali, which are directly connected to Anipur. Despite the seriousness of the damage no official steps have been taken for reconstruction. Local ZPC Pranab Mukherjee has remained unresponsive and Ratabari MLA Bijay Malakar has not issued any statement or initiated any action. Residents are urgently appealing for the intervention of the Assam Chief Minister and concerned authorities to restore the damaged road without delay.
