When we see small numbers of our migratory shorebirds during July, we always wonder whether they even left our shores to go back to their breeding grounds. Can they really go all the way back and return so early?

The wonderful story of Nijhum Rani, a Eurasian curlew tagged by Bisharga Das and team at Nijhum Dweep, Bangladesh, shows that shorebirds can indeed go all the way to southern Russia and return as early as 16th July! It spent just over 2 months at its breeding site and made 2 high altitude flights over the mighty Himalayas!

Birds can return early for multiple reasons, either by finished breeding very early or after a failed breeding attempt. But the moral of the story is that the smattering of shorebirds that we see across the Indian Subcontinent during July - Green Sandpipers, Greenshanks, Redshanks, Marsh Sandpipers, etc. - can be birds that have returned early rather than have stayed back.

Although there is evidence over multiple years that there's a spike in shorebird detections during mid-late July, we may soon be able to tell (with more tagged birds) whether this is a regular phenomenon or something that is more likely during certain years with specific climatic conditions.

Everything is exciting, and you see even the commonest birds through their fresh eyes. The dawn chorus at Perdala was so hypnotic that I was awake by 6 ‘o'clock that morning; eager not to miss the soothing calls....
