Sundargarh has a remarkable history of tribal resistance against oppressive princely-state policies and the wider freedom movement. The struggle in the former Gangpur State is especially associated with the Amko-Simko movement.

🏹 Madri Kalo
An important tribal leader of Gangpur who led the Gaontia Meli/agrarian resistance against attempts by the ruler to displace tribal Gaontias. He was arrested in 1900 and sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment.
🏹 Nirmal Munda
One of the most prominent tribal freedom fighters of modern Sundargarh. He led the Munda movement against excessive land revenue and oppressive policies in Gangpur and became the central figure of the Amko-Simko movement.

Rayagada has an important history of Kondh tribal resistance, anti-British mobilisation and participation in the national freedom movement. The region formed part of the wider Eastern Ghats belt where tribal communities resisted British expansion and later participated in the Gandhian movements.

A major Kondh resistance leader associated with the anti-British campaigns in the Eastern Ghats.
