The Ratana Meli of 1868

More than a succession dispute, the Ratana Meli in Kendujhar, Odisha, was a powerful tribal assertion against colonial intrusion and the erosion of indigenous political rights.

Led by Bhuyan chief Ratana Nayak, the uprising reflected deep resistance to British-backed rule and the disruption of traditional governance.

It united Bhuyans and allied tribes in a bold challenge to both feudal authority and colonial power.

Though eventually suppressed, the movement stands as an early expression of tribal political consciousness and indigenous resistance in India’s pre-nationalist history.
