Sankoo, November 06, 2025: Sankoo Campus, Government Degree College Kargil, launched its five-day workshop on Menstrual Hygiene, from 6th to 11th November 2025 under the PM-USHA Gender Inclusive Equity Initiative.

The workshop aims to raise awareness, promote hygienic practices, and empower young women through knowledge and dialogue around menstrual health and well-being.

The inaugural session opened with a warm welcome address by Dr. Saleem Ahmad, Nodal Officer Sankoo Campus, who highlighted the importance of such awareness programmes in creating equitable educational environments. As a gesture of respect, Dr. Ahmad presented khataq to the esteemed guest speaker, Ms. Khushbu Joshi, Principal of Pioneer Public High School and Co-Founder of the Shokpa Organisation.

Ms. Khushbu Joshi delivered an informative and inspiring session on the importance of menstrual hygiene and menstrual health management. She began by educating the audience with the basic understanding of female reproductive system and menstrual hygiene practices.

She also highlighted the need to shift from disposable to sustainable menstrual products, including reusable cloth pads and menstrual cups, as they are environmentally friendly and cost-effective over time. Ms. Joshi spoke about the biological, social, and psychological dimensions of menstruation, encouraging young girls to approach their menstrual cycles with understanding rather than fear or shame and break down long-standing taboos.

Following her address, a documentary on menstrual hygiene was screened, illustrating the real-life challenges and solutions surrounding menstrual care.

At the close of the session, each girl participant received a menstrual hygiene kit, encouraging them to apply what they learned in their daily lives.
The workshop was attended by girl students from Girls High School Sankoo and the Sankoo Campus of GDC Kargil, along with faculty members and supporting staff. The event was moderated by Dr. Azra Khatoon, Assistant Professor, Department of English, who facilitated interactive discussions and reflections following the presentation.

Over the next five days, the workshop will further engage participants in sessions that explore hygiene management, nutritional practices, myths and taboos around menstruation, peer discussion, activities and hands-on practical demonstrations.

The tour covered several villages including Batambis, Lobar, Archu, Kaskarik, Ringo, Thangbu, Doks, Grong, Stargah, and Motirik.

During interactions with villagers, the major concern highlighted across the entire Choskore valley was the issue of garbage dumping and pollution caused by stone crushers, which has become hazardous to both the environment and grazing lands. Observing its deteriorated condition, he stressed the need for its renovation under the Kargil Development Authority, assuring that due attention would be given for its preservation.

Area Councillor Nasir Munshi further raised the issue of constructing a dam on Naktul mountain, emphasizing that snow accumulation during winter could be utilized by storing water for irrigation in summer, thereby improving the cropping season. The Hon’ble MP assured that a detailed project proposal would be prepared and implemented under suitable central or other schemes in the coming days.

On the education front, the MP mentioned that as per government norms, for every 10 students, one teacher shall be provided, and assured to appoint teachers accordingly if the student strength meets the requirement.

The main issues raised were the irrigation canal, shortage of headmaster in the middle school, and demand for a ration store. The MP directed the concerned departments to address these matters on a priority basis.

The MP assured that these concerns would be taken up at appropriate levels and necessary action initiated.

At Kaskarik, Ringo, and Thangbu, the main demands included the establishment of an ice-ski ground, upgradation of the middle school, appointment of a headmaster, making the village library functional, and establishment of animal and sheep husbandry centres. The MP assured to explore possibilities of taking up these works through suitable schemes. He also encouraged the youth to actively participate in sports and winter tourism, emphasizing that government jobs are limited and self-employment opportunities should be promoted.

At Doks, issues raised included water supply, irrigation canal, fencing of the newly constructed tank, establishment of a medical aid centre, and a digitally equipped library and weaving centre. The MP assured to address these demands as per priority and in coordination with the area councillor.

At Grong, the villagers raised water scarcity and road dispute issues. Councillor Hanifa urged community members to resolve internal disputes amicably to pave the way for smooth development works, particularly road construction.
